You can change many aspects of your BG3 character, including your appearance and class, but is your race one of them? Let’s discover whether you can change your race in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Can You Change Your Race in Baldur’s Gate 3?
No, you can’t permanently change your BG3 race. Once you create your character and confirm your selection, you’ll keep the same race for the rest of your playthrough.
The only exception is using a spell such as Disguise Self to change your appearance and race. However, this is a temporary feature and is unavailable for all classes unless you have the Mask of the Shapeshifter.
Despite this, you can change most other character features anytime during your playthrough. For example, you can change your appearance by visiting the Magic Mirror in your camp, while switching classes requires finding Withers and paying a 100 gold fee.
Although these two features allow you to modify your appearance and class, your race isn’t among those you can change.
How to Disguise Yourself in Baldur’s Gate 3
If you want to change your race temporarily, disguising yourself using spells and items will be your go-to solution. The disguise self spell is the only way to do this, which you unlock with the following classes:
- Cleric (Trickery Domain)
- Rogue (Arcane Trickster)
- Fighter (Eldritch Knight)
- Ranger (Gloom Stalker)
- Warlock (Mask of Many Faces)
Alternatively, if you bought the digital deluxe version of Baldur’s Gate 3, you can access the Mask of the Shapeshifter. After escaping the Nautiloid, meeting Shadowheart, and unlocking your camp, you can find this item in your camp’s Traveler’s Chest. You’ll find your deluxe edition items here, including the Mask of the Shapeshifter.
