Grand Theft Auto 5 Achieves $1 Billion in Three Days

The sequel sets an unprecedented record.

A lot of companies get a kick out of setting sales records. Every year, Activision always shoots for big numbers with its Call of Duty franchise, with Black Ops II reaching $1 billion in sales the first 15 days of release. Leave it to Rockstar Games, though, to top that.

The publisher’s latest sequel, Grand Theft Auto 5, managed to reach the billion mark in just three days’ time, with the first day accounting for $800 million in sales. That equates to just over 15 million units sold.

“Grand Theft Auto is a cultural phenomenon and Rockstar Games continues to redefine what can be achieved in interactive entertainment,” said Strauss Zelnick, chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “We are incredibly proud of the extraordinary critical and commercial response to Grand Theft Auto 5.”
