The June 4 PlayStation 5 Event Has Been Delayed As Nationwide Protests Soar

The June 4 PlayStation 5 event has been postponed with a statement provided from Sony.

Sony has been teasing a pretty stellar lineup of games to be revealed for the PlayStation 5 during an event meant to take place later this week. The company has released a statement respectfully detailing the reason for the pushback as the United States, and countries all over the world, join in global protests against police brutality.

Sony took to their Twitter today to relay the delay news, saying “We have decided to postpone the PlayStation 5 event scheduled for June 4th. While we understand gamers worldwide are excited to see PS5 games, we do not feel that right now is a time for celebration and for now, we want to stand back and allow more important voices to be heard.”

The protests began following shortly after footage went live witnessing the murder of George Floyd due to imposed force by a recorded police officer on his neck over suspected check forgery. The death understandably triggered a nationwide response given the history of police brutality that has been going on for decades seemingly unchecked. It isn’t the first time the Black Lives Matter movement has come into the spotlight, and it won’t be the last if things don’t change, and many companies around the world have been pledging their support to what’s going on both with words and actions seen with donations and supplies to the protesters.

Sony did not divulge a new date for when the showcase will be moved to, though for now, we know that the company decided to respectfully withdraw as to not detract from what is going on currently.

As for what the event that is now postponed and what it was to be about, the first event up will be the first of many and will lead the charge by showcasing a stellar lineup of games that the next generation of gaming will bring. Though the first showcase will not focus on what the console will look like, Sony did mention publically that players should be patient because there are “a lot” of surprises lined up in the coming weeks.
