Assassin’s Creed Valhalla made its grand debut last week and fans went wild. With more RPG aspects than ever before, an Odyssey-like protagonist selection, and a story that is mean to flip what we know about Vikings on its head, Valhalla has got everyone talking in the best way possible but what folks aren’t talking enough about is that it will feature rap battles. Ubisoft’s words, not ours. Actual rap battles. With epic beards. And mead. Come on, that’s paradise!

Ready for a clash of brutal wits and quick thinking? Good, because according to an official description from Ubisoft, “Sail across the icy North Sea to discover and conquer the broken kingdoms of England. Immerse yourself in activities like hunting, fishing, dice, and drinking games, or engage in traditional Norse competitions like flyting – or, as it’s better known, verbally devastating rivals through the art of the Viking rap battle.”

Now some may say that sounds a bit like jumping the shark, when actuality it’s very in-tune with true Viking culture. “The gap between the reality of Norse society and the image we have of the reckless Viking was really interesting to me,” historian Thierry Noel told Ubisoft when working as an advisor for this project. “They were a fascinating society in terms of culture and pretty fair in the way they treated women, who had important rights at the time. It was certainly contradictory to the common image we have of Vikings.”

While we won’t see a traditional rap battle like some may be imagining, this quick-wit showdown will be one of the many interesting features players will run into when they battle it out during the England Dark Ages.
