At launch, there are five characters to play with in Slay the Spire 2, each with their unique abilities, starting relics, and conditions. Upon launch, though, only one of them will be unlocked, and here is how you can unlock the remaining characters in Slay the Spire 2.

The IroncladUnlocked by default
The SilentPlay a single run with Ironclad
The RegentPlay a single run with Silent
The NecrobinderPlay a single run with Regent
The DefectPlay a single run with Necrobinder

You don’t need to actually win the run by the required character to unlock the next character. The fastest way to unlock all of them is to start a run with the required character, pause the game, and select give up, because that counts as a run, and even though you’re defeated, you’ll still unlock the character.

This takes around five to ten minutes to do, and you’ll be able to play with whoever you want. Whenever you unlock a new character, you’ll see the dedicated lore entry in the form of an Epoch card along with a neat little animation and artwork for that specific character.

Since this is an early access title, nothing above is final. If there are any changes made in a patch, I’ll make sure to update these here.

Character Descriptions

  • The Ironclad: The last soldier of the Ironclads. Crushes foes with sword and flame against his will.
  • The Silent: A huntress from outside the Spire. Ready to stab and poison anything in her way.
  • The Regent: Heir to the Throne of Stars. Wields cosmic powers, but his minions do the work.
  • The Necrobinder: A Spireborn lich who seeks revenge. Calls upon her trusty left hand, Osty, in combat.
  • The Defect: An automaton eternally modifying itself to survive. Deploys Orb technology when it must fight.

Three characters return from the original, and two new ones join the fray. Mega Crit has done it again by introducing fairly unique archetypes, and none of the new characters feel anything close to the original cast.

Ali has been writing about video games for the past six years and is always on the lookout for the next indie game to obsess over and recommend to everyone in sight. When he isn't spending an unhealthy amount of time in Slay the Spire, he's probably trying out yet another retro-shooter or playing Dark Souls for the 50th time.
