No, this is not some weird crossover where you would see those squid punk kids shooting ink all over the Final Fantasy XIV world – how would that even be possible? Square Enix didn’t even release Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo. In reality, it’s just a very creative name for an add-on for the popular MMO, and there’s a reason for its name. Why, you ask? Let’s try to explain what Splatoon is in Final Fantasy XIV.
What Does Splatoon Add-On Do in Final Fantasy XIV?
Splatoon is actually a fan-made plugin for increased accessibility in Final Fantasy XIV. It enables a custom waymark system and allows players to create and place as many grouped waymarks as they want as well as other indicators and labels. As the authors of this add-on state on their GitHub page, Splatoon is “redefining FFXIV navigation with unlimited, precise waymarks.” So, colorful waymarks on the ground – I guess it kind of does look like Splatoon.

How to Install Splatoon Plugin for Final Fantasy XIV
Detailed instructions for installation can be found here, and for all support from the author and the community, there is also their Discord server.
The best thing about this plugin is that it runs only on the local machine, i.e. on your side, so it won’t send anything to FFXIV servers, making it less likely to get you banned by Square Enix (at least if you are not playing from China, for more details check the official plugin’s page). That being said, using third-party mods or plugins is still very much against the Final Fantasy XIV Terms of Service, and is a bannable offense. We can’t recommend you use a plugin like this, but the option and information are there, nonetheless.
