Overpower Damage Stat in Diablo 4 Explained – Percent, Damage Multiplier and More

Overpower is one of several damage types that, once activated, significantly increase how much bonus damage you inflict onto enemies with one attack. It is similar to critical damage, but the two have a few differences. The main contrast is that Overpower damage has a fixed chance of activating and scales with specific stats, while critical chance rates can change.

Here is a quick summary of the Overpower damage stat:

  • Overpower has a fixed activation chance rate of 3% that you cannot change. You can, however, use weapon effects that guarantee Overpower attacks.
  • The Overpower effect grants extra damage to whichever skill you are using when it is activated.
  • Overpower scales with your Life and Fortify stats but has a base value of 50% and caps at 150%.
  • Damage over time, passive abilities and Channeled skills cannot Overpower at all.

Overpower and Critical Damage in Diablo 4 Explained

You will know you are dealing Overpower damage to enemies when you see large blue-green numbers appearing on your screen. Critical damage, on the other hand, shows up as yellow numbers. It is also possible to deal Overpower Critical damage, shown as orange numbers, that combine both stats. Personally, I didn’t see it too often on my sorcerer, but you’ll have higher odds if you make a crit build on rogue or barbarian.

With this in mind, you can create builds that either maximize your Overpower damage or guarantee that certain skills activate it. You can also focus on critical chance and damage so that if you Overpower simultaneously, you will dish out huge bonus damage to whoever you are fighting. There are plenty of ways to utilize this stat, with these being just a few examples you can experiment with.

To give a direct example, several armor pieces on my sorcerer increase my Overpower damage, allowing me to defeat large groups in situations where this stat activates easily. It ends up being a fun bonus when it appears unexpectedly!
