This page will show you how to get the Dreg’s Promise, a Sidearm that can be used in your Special Weapon slot of Destiny. It is part of the House of Wolves DLC, and can only be obtained competing in the Prison of Elders.
Dreg’s Promise
The Dreg’s Promise can only be earned after you are randomly given the Elder Cipher Exotic Bounty by competing in the level 34 or 35 Prison of Elders. It is very uncommon to see it appear after you beat the level 34 boss, but common after the 35 boss. If you don’t get it on your first attempt, try moving to another character and running these activities again. This Bounty will not drop by completing the level 28 or level 32 Prison of Elders.
Something to keep in mind about the Elder Cipher Exotic Bounty is that it is given immediately after you kill the boss, not in the Treasure Room like most other rewards. You also need to ensure that you have space for the Bounty in your inventory, as this will not be sent to the Postmaster if you don’t. Make sure at least one slot for Bounties is open when competing in the Prison of Elders.
When you receive the Bounty, head to The Reef and speak to Variks. You’ll have to choose a weapon, but don’t worry too much about making the right call, you can change your mind later on. For our purposes today we’re obviously going to choose the Dreg’s Promise.
Then next step is to return to the Prison of Elders and play on level 32, 34 or 35. When you’re done you’ll have to use a Treasure Key to open the big chest in the middle, and this will give you the Queen’s Cipher. This is also a random drop, so you may have to play through the Prison of Elders several more times until you find it. Most Guardians report having it by their third run.
Head back to The Reef and speak with Variks again. This time your task is easy, but very frustrating. Variks will tell you to wait. This changes based on the player, but you could be waiting more than two days for him to have news about the Bounty. Just keep checking in every several hours. When he is ready, Variks will inform you that you need to earn 1,000 points in the Prison of Elders. This isn’t as easy as it sounds, and the point system is broken down as follows.
- Level 28 Boss = 75 Points
- Level 32 Boss = 200 Points
- Level 34 Boss = 350 Points
- Level 35 Boss = 450 Points
As you can see, to get the points you need you’ll have to run through the Prison of Elders a few more times. Luckily this is just about the bosses, and you can actually earn extra points if there is more than one boss in the activity you’re choosing. For example, if you have a non-challenge boss in the fourth round, you will still get 75 points for killing it. You will then get the point value for the round five boss, which will correspond with the level that you’re completing it at. Because of this, it’s possible to get the 1,000 points needed by running the level 35 Prison of Elders twice.
Make your way back to The Reef and speak with Variks one more time. He is going to allow you to choose your weapon, which if you’re reading this should be the Dreg’s Promise. If you’re on the verge of changing your mind, you can read about the Lord of Wolves Shotgun and the Queenbreaker’s Bow Fusion Rifle.
