If you want to build new gear, then you’re going to need to learn how to target and farm specific body parts on your enemies. This is an essential part of The Surge’s upgrade system, and in this article we’ll show you everything you need to know to start farming for materials in The Surge right off the bat. We’ll also talk a little about the crafting system and how it breaks down the various pieces of enemy armor you obtain while farming.
How to Farm Materials
Farming materials is essential if you want to upgrade your Exo-Rig, and you’re going to want to learn about this important factor early on in the game, when enemies are much easier to deal with.
First off, if you don’t know anything about Schematics, then be sure to take a look at our guide on how to get more Schematics. Once you know how to get Schematics, and have some in your inventory, you can start farming for the parts that you need.
Let’s say that you are trying to put together the pieces that you need to craft yourself some Body Gear. You’ll definitely hit this point somewhere along the way, as Body Gear is the only way to obtain flashlights, which are really helpful throughout the first portion of the game and beyond.
In order to craft Body Gear you’re going to need to obtain specific materials, as well as Tech Scrap. Tech Scrap itself can be acquired from enemies, or by using consumables that you find along the way. The crafting materials themselves are found by cutting off those specific gear parts from enemies.
So, if you need to build yourself some Body Gear, you’re going to need to find enemies with armored bodies, and then target their body. Attack them until you get the Finisher icon, which is the E button by default on PC. Once you see this icon pop up, get close enough to the enemy to trigger it, and then hold the button down to charge it. Keep in mind that you can still be attacked when you are charging the Finisher.
Depending on how much damage was done to the particular part, the chances of cutting it off may vary. If you do manage to cut it off, the item will appear as a pickup on the ground. Grab it, and it should appear as a broken body gear piece. On its own this item will do nothing for you. But, once you visit a Gear Station it will automatically be broken down into the materials that you need to upgrade or craft that particular piece.
Using this information, you should now be able to successfully farm the crafting materials that you need to upgrade and craft various items in The Surge. Remember that the types of attacks you use (horizontal or vertical) should all depend on the subtarget, so if you’re targeting their head you may wish to focus on vertical strikes, as they will cause more damage to that particular body part.
