As you play through the main campaign in Splatoon 2, you’ll be given the chance to use an assortment of different “Hero” weapons. These weapons are just variations of the ones you’ll find in the game’s multiplayer modes, but each one can be upgraded to increase its damage, range, and other stats. In this article we’ll talk more about the upgrade system, how to unlock weapons in Splatoon 2, when you can unlock the weapon system, and how you can start upgrading your weapons today.
How to Upgrade Weapons
Upgrading weapons in Splatoon 2 is a fairly simple task, though you will need a few things in order to do it. First, you will need to complete up to the third lair, just before the first boss fight of the game. When you complete the third lair, and then defeat the boss, you’ll unlock the first of many “Hero” weapons available to your Inkling hero. You’ll also unlock the Ammo Knights Enhancifier, which can be used to upgrade any of the weapons you acquire from Sheldon.

In order to upgrade a weapon’s stats, you’re going to need to obtain a few different things. First, you’re going to have to load up on Power Eggs. These are the little round orbs that you collect throughout the different lairs in Splatoon 2, and they can often be earned just for breaking crates, popping balloons, and just completing various levels.
You’ll also need to acquire Sardinium, which is a more premium currency that has to be found throughout the world. There is usually at least one Sardinium per lair, so be sure to check around for it like you would for Sunken Scrolls and other collectibles. Need help finding it? Once you have all the items you need, make your way over to the Ammo Knights Enhancifier and active it by pressing A on the controller. Once inside, locate the weapon that you want to upgrade, and then select it. If you haven’t collected all the items that you need, you won’t be able to upgrade the weapon just yet.
