The third global tour event will go live this week in Pokemon GO, and that means Trainers all over the world can start jumping into the Hoenn Cup Great League Edition for the GO Battle League. Like any other special cup that appears in the game, a new meta will form based on the best picks from the Generation III region.
There are a ton of great picks from the Hoenn region that you’ll see in PvP even when there isn’t a massive Generation III celebration in GO. To get you up to speed on which ones truly stand out among the rest, we have a full guide with the best picks and rules for the Hoenn Cup in Pokemon GO.
Best Picks for the Hoenn Cup GL Edition in Pokemon GO
Before jumping into the top picks for this limited-time meta, we need to outline the rules. This time there aren’t many and the main one simply limits picks to the Hoenn region, or Pokedex entries #252 to #386. These Pokemon must also be at 1,500 CP or lower, which is where the Great League name comes in. Below you can find 10 of the best options for the GO Battle League event.
Top 10 Hoenn Cup Picks in Pokemon GO:
- Registeel – Lock On (Fast) and Focus Blast / Zap Cannon (Charged)
- Sableye XL – Shadow Claw (Fast) and Foul Play / Power Gem (Charged)
- Regirock – Lock On (Fast) and Stone Edge / Focus Blast (Charged)
- Altaria – Dragon Breath (Fast) and Sky Attack / Moonblast (Charged)
- Pelipper – Wing Attack (Fast) and Water Weather Ball / Hurricane (Charged)
- Swampert – Mud Shot (Fast) and Hydro Cannon / Earthquake (Charged)

Some of the picks on the list above will have shadow variations as well. Most shadow variants in the Pokemon GO Battle League are viable, if not better than the base form. In any case, the moves will remain the same, so don’t worry about not having the right attacks.

Also, keep in mind that not all of the Pokemon listed will work well together. You need a good mix of types in the Hoenn Cup and a mix of roles. Every team should have a strong lead that can burn shields, a tank or flex, and a closer. You’ll quickly learn what the best matchups are as you complete your first battles in the Hoenn Cup.
