Pillars of Eternity Tips – Resting, Combat and Enemy Guide

Tips for resting, combat and understanding your enemies in Pillars of Eternity.
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Pillars of Eternity is a massive game with a lot of moving parts. How things unfold will depend on many different circumstances, and understanding those factors will help players get the most from their experiences. While we don’t pretend to have all of the answers in this particular article, we have a solid foundation of game concepts for those just starting out. Whether it’s the concept of resting, crafting, combat or a guide to your foes, we have you covered.

Resting Your Party

Anyone who’s ever been on an epic journey knows that you need rest, and Pillars of Eternity is no different. Resting is a key game mechanic in making sure that your party is always ready for the challenges ahead. In fact, if you don’t get enough rest, this can have a negative impact on things like your maximum endurance, accuracy and other defenses.

In order to rest, your party must find a resting location, which can be inns, your stronghold or a camp. While the latter will be the most common place to take a breather, there are some factors that players will need to keep in mind. For example, your party cannot rest while in combat, if they’ve been spotted by an enemy or if the characters are not within a certain distance of one another.

Crafting and Enchanting

We’re not about to give you a full breakdown of the crafting and enchanting in Pillars of Eternity. We have the official guide to help you with that. No, we’re going to focus on the concept for players who might be new and not sure what this game mechanic entails.

Essentially, crafting can be used to create consumable goods, such as potions or scrolls. In order to do this, however, players will need to gather ingredients. These can be found throughout the entire map, which is all the more reason that players should explore every nook and cranny. Oh, and as for managing these supplies, ingredients are automatically put into a special area of your stash, so no need to spend your precious exploring time on inventory management.

Your Stronghold

Each player’s stronghold (Caed Nua) is found in the Eastern Reach of Defiance Bay, above the Endless Paths of Old Nua. This stronghold can be accessed by completing the Stewards quest in the early parts of the game, and it becomes an important point of interest for you and your companions. For starters, your stronghold is a place where you can make significant changes, tackle special quests or even rest if Brighthollow has been repaired.

Combat Mechanics

As anyone familiar with role-playing games knows, combat is very complex beast, and Pillars of Eternity is no different, as it uses a real-time with pause system to control the pace of the battle. Beyond that, players will command one or more of their party members, issuing orders that will depend on the enemy they are facing, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of their fellow adventurers. For example, if your party consists of a heavily armored melee fighter, he will get up close and personal with your foe, while a character with a potent ranged attack will want to support them while staying at a safe distance. In a nutshell, no two combat situations are likely to be the same, and understanding your party (and your adversaries) is key. More on that in one moment.

Enemy Guide / Bestiary

There are a lot of creatures and monsters in Pillars of Eternity, and part of defeating them is tied to how much you know about your foe. The good news is, each time you engage in combat with one of your adversaries, your group will unravel some of the beast’s secrets. It’s a simple but effective game mechanic, as experience really is one of the best sources of knowledge. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have a friend who can give you all the answers, which we can.
