Monster Hunter: World – How to Capture Monsters

by Josh Hawkins

Monster Hunter: World is about more than just mindlessly killing monsters, and sometimes you’ll be asked to capture a powerful monster and bring it in to Astera for the researchers to look into it more. If you’ve never done this before, then it can be a bit confusing, but don’t worry, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to learn how to capture monsters in Monster Hunter: World. Once you can capture monsters you’ll be well on your way to taking on bigger hunts.

How to Capture Monsters

The first step to capturing a monster is to have all the items that you need to pull off the job. If you’re heading into a quest or Investigation that tasks you with this, then you’ll start with the items that you need in the Supply Box. However, if you’re just trying to capture a monster in an Expedition, you’ll need to craft the items yourself.

To capture monsters, you’re going to need to get your hands on traps and Tranquilizer Bombs. As we said before, these items will be in your supply box waiting for you. But if you have to make them yourself, then you’ll need to head into the crafting menu and make them yourself.

Once you have the tools that you need, it’s time to head out into the world and start the capturing process. Much like other games where you capture things (take Pokemon for example) you’ll want to weaken the monsters as much as possible just to make things easier to deal with.

When you have weakened the monster, it’s time to set up a trap. We’d suggest following the monster as it limps away back towards its resting place, and then wait for it to try to find food or go to sleep. When it does this, set up a trap nearby and then wake the beast back up. Lead it into the trap and wait for it to go off. Once the trap has gone off, immediately shower the monster with Tranquilizer Bombs until the monster passes out entirely.

You’ll have completely captured the monster once it passes out on the ground from the Tranquilizer Bombs, allowing you to complete the process. You can’t carve a captured monster up for different body pieces, however, you will receive some nice rewards at the end of the mission, which can sometimes be better than any items you might have received from the beast itself.
