Magic: The Gathering Best War of The Spark Commanders

Here are some of the best new commanders from War of the Spark.

War of the Spark has settled in as being one of the most enjoyable sets in recent memory in Magic: The Gathering. The unique combination of uncommon Planeswalkers, interesting spells, and bombastic creatures all make for a very good time. With every new set that releases there is a certain subset of the MtG player base who are looking for legendary creatures.

I am, of course, talking about the Commander players. Those who have a fondness for absurdity and who refuse to buy more than one copy of any card. Commander players are no doubt pretty happy with War of the Spark and its interesting selection of new potential leaders. Thanks to the way the set is built there are plenty of creatures to choose from, but they are not all created equal. Here then, are five of the best for the Commander players out there.

Roalesk, Apex Hybrid

Roalesk is a five mana 4/5 with flying and trample. Evasion and trample on a creature isn’t bad, but it isn’t all that exciting either. When it enters the battlefield, you can put two counters on another creature you control. Good Simic stuff so far, but still nothing exceptional. However, when it dies you get to proliferate twice. That is game-winning in and of itself. All of a sudden, every creature on the field has the potential to be two power stronger. Combine this with cards like Doubling Season and Hardened Scales and you’ve probably just won the game.

Ilharg, the Raze-Boar

The ability to put creatures into play for free is basically cheating. The ability to do that so that the creature comes in tapped and attacking is ever more absurd. Yet, here we have a Boar God who can do just that, every single time it attacks. A few red spells can give you extra attack steps if you attack more then you get to use this effect more. Plus, it can dodge Commander Tax by just going into your deck third from the top. This is not a card to be underestimated.

Tolsimir, Friend to Wolves

Tolsimir comes complete with a second body when it enters the battlefield. More importantly, that token is a Wolf. Whenever a Wolf enters the battlefield you gain 3 life and you can have that Wolf fight an opposing creature. This turns every Wolf in your deck into life points and removal all at the same time. Plus, white has some really good flicker effects, so you can take advantage of that to turn Tolsimir into a huge advantage engine.

God-Eternal Rhonas

Green is a color that has a lot of big creatures with trample. They have a tendency to always be bigger than the opposition and they delight in it. Rhonas doubles their power when he enters the battlefield and gives them Vigilance which means they can still defend after attacking. Of course, if you’ve built your deck well your opponent won’t have a chance to retaliate because they’ll be dead.

Niv-Mizzet Reborn

5-color creatures in Commander are few and far between. Building a deck around them can go in a few different ways, often in a tribal direction thanks to Scion of the Ur-Dragon and Horde of Notions. Niv-Mizzet Reborn just asks that you put a lot of color pairs in your deck. Doing so will allow you to check the top ten cards for them and possibly draw ten cards. You’re going to fill the deck with good cards anyway, so this card fits a 5-color powerhouse deck perfectly.

Those are the Commanders we think are best from this set. It would have been very easy to just choose the other three God-Eternal cards, but variety is the spice of life. If you’re looking for any more MtG content then check out our Hub for all things of the spell-slinging variety.
