As you make your way north from the starting point in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you’ll encounter some cold weather. If Link remains in the cold weather for too long he will start to take damage and eventually die.
This article covers how to stay warm in Breath of the Wild, and how to avoid dying in cold climates so you can get to the Keh Namut Shrine. We’ll also go over how to find the Warm Doublet in Breath of the Wild using the old man’s recipe so you don’t have to worry about cold climates in the early game.
Zelda: Breath of the Wild – How to Stay Warm, Find the Warm Doublet
First and foremost, there are a few ways you can stay warm in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The easiest way at the beginning of the game is to carry a lit torch with you. However, if you put the torch away, run or change weapons, you’ll extinguish the flame on the torch and might find yourself in a bind. Let’s go over some of the ways you can light your torch and stay warm even without a torch.
To light a torch you need to hold it under a fire source (attack a fire, basically). There are a number of lit campfires around Hyrule, but they’re not always readily available, and some are guarded by enemies. If you’re in need of a fire and you’re not near a camp, you can use wood.
Bundles of wood are found by old cabins, but you can also cut down trees with a sword or ax. This either creates a bundle of wood immediate, or you’ll see the cut-down tree trunk on the ground. Attack the tree trunk and it will turn into a bundle of wood.
Once you have a bundle of wood you need to be able to light it to create a fire. This can be done in a variety of ways. If you have flint and any metal weapon you can drop the flint right next to the wood, then hit the flint with your metal weapon to create a spark that will ignite the wood. The flint has to be pretty close to the wood and each piece of flint is only good for one use, so make sure it’s close enough before you hit it.
As you progress through the game you’ll find various weapons that are fire-based and create flames with every attack. These also work to light wood and start a fire in case you need to rest or want to wait out the night. However, early in the game, your best option to create fire is to use Fire Arrows, which you can get pretty early on.
How to Get the Warm Doublet
Another way to stay warm is to find the Warm Doublet. With the Warm Doublet equipped you can traverse cold climates in the early portions of the game without a problem. There are two ways the Warm Doublet early on (it can be bought later in the game).
You can meet the old man at the top Mount Hylia, south of the Keh Namut shrine. Speak with him there and he’ll give you the Warm Doublet, but by that time you would’ve already traversed quite a bit of cold territory.
Instead of hiking up to the top of Mount Hylia, you can meet the old man by his cabin in the fields south of the Temple of Time. He only shows up at night, but if you make the Spicy Meat and Seafood Fry and speak with him once it’s done, he’ll give you the Warm Doublet in exchange for helping him remember the recipe. You can even find all of the ingredients for the dish in the opening area of the game.
However you decide to get the Warm Doublet or keep your torch lit, it’s imperative that you do not traverse cold climates without something to keep Link warm. It’s also imperative that you check out our Zelda: Breath of the Wild game hub for more in-depth strategy articles!
