When Viera and Hrothgar were revealed as the new playable races in FFXIV back in Shadowbringers, players were disappointed to see that both were gender-locked throughout the whole expansion. Vieras finally got their gender counterpart in Endwalker, but will the same happen to Hrothgars?
Are Female Hrothgars Coming to FFXIV?
Female Hrothgars were confirmed to exist multiple times in FFXIV, and they’ll finally be a reality in the game in the Dawntrail expansion. Rumors have been around for a while, but the official announcement has only been confirmed in the latest Japan Fan Fest, where we could finally have a glimpse of the new playable race.
Hrothgars are currently a male-only race with several limitations like being unable to wear most hats, and all of this contributes to their overall unpopularity compared to other races. But some small details pointed to their female counterparts being finally introduced to the game. Not yet as playable, but as an NPC first. Slight MSQ spoilers ahead.
At the final moments of the Main Story Quests in 6.5, players could catch a glimpse of a mysterious pair of legs. We have no idea who they belong to, but we can be sure that this person will be important for some upcoming plot points, possibly leading to the Dawntrail expansion. And in traditional conspiracist fashion, some fans have speculated that they belong to a Female Hrothgar.
Ironically, dataminers have discovered that the model was… literally just that. A moving pair of legs with no body. Devs have certainly done this in advance to avoid spoiling the person’s identity, but the fact they used an incomplete model is very curious, to say the least.
User drbiohazmat on Reddit has made a detailed analysis of this model, where they notice how hairy it is compared to other races. They also compare its height to a female Roegadyn, one of the tallest female races in the game with a similar build to what people imagined female Hrothgars would have.
The same cutscenes have also possibly teased one of the new jobs in Dawntrail, which many people guessed to be Green Mage. That particular guess was wrong and we’re getting Pictomancer instead, but the Female Hrothgars are a reality.
Said NPC was revealed to be Wuk Lamat, daughter of the current leader of Tulal. She’s in Eorzea looking for some help in the throne succession rituals, and the Scions will be dragged into this as the good people-helpers they are.
Patch 6.55 will bring a conclusion to the Growing Light story and give us a first-hand glimpse at Wuk Lamat. It’ll be here very soon, and it’s nice to see that there’s finally no gender-lock for all races. And all that’s left is giving Vieras and Hrothgars hats!
