Is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth Turn-Based?

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is turn-based… mostly. Like its prequel, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth uses turn-based combat, RPG style. Infinite Wealth’s battle system sets itself apart from its prequels in a few big ways, however.

During each character’s turn, players can move the character around using the left stick before selecting a command. In addition to giving players more control over the affected area in AOE attacks, positioning characters provides the following benefits:

  • Characters may do more damage when they attack an enemy they’re close to.
  • Ichiban and Kiryu can grab objects that are close by and attack enemies with them.
  • Allies can do combo attacks if they’re nearby.

The game is still turn-based, though, so you can’t move other characters when it isn’t their turn. There is also a radius that the characters must stay confined in when moving, based on their placement when their turn begins.

There is a way to engage in some brawler gameplay, though, and that’s through the classic Yakuza series protagonist, Kiryu.

Kiryu’s Brawler Gameplay in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth

The exception to Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth’s turn-based gameplay comes from Kiryu’s exclusive job, Dragon of Dojima, and its Dragon Resurgence ability. When Kiryu battles in his Dragon of Dojima job, his hype meters will fill as he deals and receives damage. When all hype meters are full, players can press R2 to activate Dragon Resurgence. They’ll have about 10 seconds to freely move Kiryu around and attack enemies in the brawler gameplay fashion of Yakuza games from before Like a Dragon.

When Kiryu joins your party in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, he will already be in his Dragon of Dojima job, offering players the chance to use Dragon Resurgence and engage in some brawler gameplay. This gameplay mechanic is tied to Dragon of Dojima, however. If you change Kiryu’s job at Alo-Happy Tours, he will lose the ability to do Dragon Resurgence.
