How to Unlock Mai in Street Fighter 6

Before you work on getting Mai’s Outfit 2 in Street Fighter 6, you need to unlock Mai herself. As a DLC character, you can unlock Mai individually for 350 Fighter Coins (approximately US$7) or you can unlock her automatically as part of the Season 2 Character Pass (US$30) or Season 2 Ultimate Pass (US$50).

The fastest way to unlock Mai’s Outfit 2 in Street Fighter 6 is to buy it with Fighter Coins. It costs 50 Fighter Coins in the shop (or approximately US$1), which seems small enough to justify the purchase, but we do not recommend doing this. Save your Fighter Coins for other special costumes and instead unlock Mai’s Outfit 2 for free in World Tour Mode.

How to Unlock Mai’s Outfit 2 for Free in Street Fighter 6 World Tour Mode

It takes a bit of effort, but you can unlock Mai’s Outfit 2 for free in Street Fighter 6’s World Tour Mode. The following sections will go over how to do so step by step, starting with becoming Mai’s pupil and finally raising her Bond level to 100.

How to Become Mai’s Student in Street Fighter 6 World Tour Mode

Once you’ve purchased the Street Fighter 6 Mai DLC, you can freely select her in Arcade Mode and Fighting Ground, but you need to put in some work to become her student in World Tour Mode. First, make sure you are Terry’s student. You have to complete the first Knock Out Festival to begin the second one, which will get you started on the road to becoming Mai’s student.

Go to your hangout in Metro City and select to go to “One Fateful Day.” From here, select “Knock Out Festival,” the same scenario where you became Terry’s student (and unlocked his Outfit 2). Right outside your hideout is a poster for the new Knock Out Festival. Examine it, then return to your hideout and change the time to night.

After changing the time, exit your hideout and walk forward towards Beat Square to automatically start the cutscene introducing the second Knock Out Festival. Then speak to Alice, who will have a multi-colored mission marker by her name. Like in the first Knock Out Festival, you’ll be given an avatar hat item to wear (the KOF Event Cap alpha). Go to the status menu and equip it for now.

Next, you need to find a partner for this two-on-two tournament. The only person who seems to be without a partner is “Ichiko Kureno,” a mysterious woman standing near a large sign. Speak to her and agree to pair up to move the tournament along.

Your first order of business is to “win against two teams.” All of the teams will be around Beat Square and will have the multi-colored mission marker by their names as well as on the mini-map. As long as you are around Level 55 or higher, these fights should pose no issue (and if you’ve caught up with all the Season 1 DLC Masters, your character is likely close to or at Level 100 by now). Challenge the following pairs in any order:

  • Thrasher Damnd (Level 50) and Mad Gear Elissa (Level 46),
  • and Rudra (Level 50) and Chandi (Level 46).

You and Ichiko will battle together against both pairs. After defeating them, you’ll have to win against three more teams of two. Seek out and battle the following pairs:

  • Hwang (Level 49) and Jae Hee (Level 46),
  • Shushu (Level 48) and Reirei (Level 48),
  • and Mr. Maximum (Level 48) and Duck Queen (Level 47).

If any of these fighters seem familiar, that’s on purpose — and they will be back later. And don’t worry if something seems off about Ichiko; nearby fighters will tell you that they saw a pretty woman who just disappeared into thin air, but Ichiko probably has nothing to do with that.

After you defeat all five teams, you and Ichiko will have officially won the tournament, and two tickets to Pao Pao Cafe. After receiving the tickets, take the opportunity to unequip the KOF Cap if you prefer your previous equipment, then talk to Ichiko again where you first found her (there won’t be a quest marker, so it can be a bit confusing) to travel to the Pao Pao Cafe. If you didn’t speak to Ichiko right after winning the tournament, make sure it’s still night; she won’t be around to talk to during the daytime.

You and Ichiko make it to the Pao Pao Cafe and see Terry and his little brother Andy just as Andy is about to leave. This prompts Ichiko to reveal… that she was in fact Mai all along! Unfortunately, Andy leaves before saying anything to her, leaving her feeling down. She invites you to Aokigahara, which unlocks the location on the World Map.

Travel to Aokigahara. Once you arrive, watch a cutscene of Mai defeating her ninja pupils. When the cutscene is finished, speak to Mai to officially become her student.

How to Increase Mai’s Bond Level to 100 in Street Fighter 6 World Tour Mode

Now that you are officially Mai’s student, you need to increase her Bond level to 100 to unlock her Outfit 2. The main way to do this is by giving her gifts that she likes, but you also have a few extra methods of gaining quick Bond level points.

Go on a Trip Around the World With Mai

Going on a trip around the world with Mai is a quick way to increase her Bond level by 10 points. If you have bonus Style points from other fighters, you can transfer them to Mai for a fast boost. If not, equip Mai’s Style and battle a few of the ninjas in Aokigahara to quickly level up her Style. Also, be sure to buy an Anmitsu for 1260 zenny from Merchant Hawker nearby (under “General Store”) to get a bonus to your Style EXP.

After raiding your Mai-Style level a bit, speak to Mai a few times to unlock the “Traveling With Mai!” mission. Then when you’re ready, speak to Mai again and choose any of the locations to visit. You can approach them in any order. Some locations are simple cutscenes, while others have a quick battle.

When you’re done at one location, speak to Mai again to visit another. Once you’ve visited each location, the mission will be complete, earning you some Mai-themed wallpapers for your phone and three Herbal Cure-Alls, and Mai’s Bond level will increase by 10.

Chatting and Sparring With Mai

As your Style and Bond level with Mai increases, you can chat with her, as indicated by a small red light bulb next to her name. Some conversations will increase her Bond level, including:

  • Talking about going on a journey increases her Bond level by 5.
  • Calling the Shiranui style “beautiful and cool” increases her Bond level by 2.

In addition, every so often Mai will challenge you to a sparring match. Each time you win one of these battles that she has requested, Mai’s Bond level will increase by 7.

Mai’s Favorite Gifts

The main way to increase Mai’s Bond level is to give her some of her favorite gifts.

Heavy Metal Demo Tape

Mai’s Bond level increases by 5 when you give her the Heavy Metal Demo Tape. The good news is that various opponents across the “One Fateful Day” scenario drop the Heavy Metal Demo Tape after defeating them under certain conditions. If you’ve gone on the world trip with Mai, you’ve probably met a few such opponents already. The following table lists the opponents who drop the Heavy Metal Demo Tape, the conditions that need to be met for the item to drop, and their location:

Fighter Name and LevelHow to Get the Heavy Metal Demo Tape From ThemLocation

Taufik (Level 52)Defeat using Marisa’s styleColosseo
Guillaume (Level 55)Drive Parry 15 timesFête Foraine
Fighters who drop the Heavy Metal Demo Tape in Street Fighter 6 World Tour Mode

After defeating the fighters, you can come back later to challenge them again and get another Heavy Metal Demo Tape, but there are other items you can gift to Mai to increase her Bond level in the meantime.

Ornamental Hairpin

The best gift to give Mai is the Ornamental Hairpin, as it increases her Bond level by a whopping 40 points. To obtain the Ornamental Hairpin, you need to complete another side mission. Return to Metro City in the daytime and speak to Alice — you’ll know you’re on the right track if you see the blue crown mission icon next to her name.

You’ll unlock the mission “The Legendary Supporting Cast.” Your goal is to talk to the Fatal Fury cosplayers all around Beat Square in the daytime and at night. Thankfully, they are all marked with mission icons. In the daytime, you’ll meet (and battle):

  • Iron Hand (Level 48), who is cosplaying the arm wrestling machine,
  • Flanco (Level 47), who is cosplaying Franco Bash,
  • Sankaku Mochizuki (Level 49), who is cosplaying Sokaku Mochizuki,
  • Will Bobson (Level 48), who is cosplaying Bob Wilson,
  • and Gura (Level 47) and Saan (level 48), who are cosplaying as Geese’s henchmen.

At night, you’ll chat with (and challenge):

  • Chad (Level 45), who is cosplaying Richard Meyer,
  • Ron Shu Tan (Level 46), who is cosplaying Tung Fu Rue,
  • Shushu (Level 48) and Reirei (Level 48), who are cosplaying as Jin Chonshu and Jin Chonrei,
  • Mr. Maximum (Level 48) and Duck Queen (Level 47), who are cosplaying as Michael Max and Duck King,
  • and Hwang (Level 49) and Jae Hee (Level 46), who are cosplaying as Kim Kaphwan’s sons Kim Jae Hoon and Kim Dong Hwan. When you speak to Jae Hee, you will team up to battle against Hwang.

Once you’ve talked with and defeated each cosplayer, you will automatically get the mission rewards — no need to return to Alice. Take the Ornamental Hairpin to Aokigahara and give it to Mai to increase her Bond level by 40.

Other Gifts Mai Enjoys

If you need an extra point or two to get Mai’s Bond level up to 100, the following items will increase Mai’s Bond by 2 when gifted to her:

  • Fan.
  • Instant Soba.
  • Prepaid Card.
  • Rubber Duckies.
  • Natto.
  • Luxury Heat Pack.
  • Knock Off Blanka-chan Doll.

Prepaid Cards can be purchased without limit from Shopkeeper Dora in Old Nayshall for 1260 zenny each time and are a popular gift for other Masters as well. The other items in the above list can be obtained as drops from various fighters throughout World Tour Mode.

There are also plenty of other items you can gift to Mai for 1 Bond level increase at a time, if necessary. If you’ve been raising Mai’s Style as well as her Bond, you likely won’t need to gift her any extra items, but you can use the ones you obtained while raising Terry’s Bond — or the Bond of any other World Tour Mode Masters you’ve worked with — for some quick points in a pinch.

Once Mai’s Bond level reaches 100, you will automatically unlock her Outfit 2 for use in Arcade Mode and the Fighting Ground game modes. The costume is based on her new default outfit in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, and Mai can be seen wearing it throughout World Tour Mode as well.
