Navigating the vast open plains of Monster Hunter Wilds can confuse many players, especially with several things happening simultaneously. Players see so many resources, monsters, and points of interest that it is practically impossible to keep track of them all.
Opening the map and setting up waypoints is the best way to keep yourself focused on a goal, especially when finding something specific like a monster in a certain environment or an item for crafting. Here’s a quick guide on how to open the map and set up waypoints in Monster Hunter Wilds.
How to Show the Map in Monster Hunter Wilds

Depending on your platform, the “Open Map” button is the View button on Xbox and the Touchpad button on PlayStation. For PC or Windows, it should be set to “M” as default.
When you open your map, you’ll see a lot of icons on the map. Most show possible resources, monster locations, points of interest, camps, NPC icons, and more. However, you can also switch the map to an environment overview mode where all areas will have different colors and shades pertaining to specific environment types where specific monsters may reside.
Since you are hunting different kinds of monsters, especially when you reach the mid or endgame, you’ll still have to search for monsters depending on their environmental habitat. This is where the map’s environment overview mode comes in handy.
If you play with the map more, you’ll also notice it is three-dimensional. You can see lower and higher points on the map by moving it around using the analog sticks or your mouse and mouse wheel.

How to Set Waypoints on the Map in Monster Hunter Wilds

To set up waypoints, you have to search for a point of interest or any point, and press “R3” for controllers or “X” for PC.
Once a waypoint has been set, you’ll see a marker leading you to the waypoint without opening the map. You can also see the marker on the minimap so you can plan ahead or maybe avoid nearby monsters.
The UI becomes hard to digest with all the icons flooded on the screen, so it takes a while to get used to. Familiarizing yourself with the controls helps you navigate the areas quicker, too.
