How to Level Skill and Support Gems in Path of Exile 2

So many skill combinations to try out!

Path of Exile 2’s main character building or progression starts with the skill gems. The core of any good build is to have a good combination of skill and support gems to play off each other to power your build. However, sometimes skills lack power or feel underwhelming. This might be due to having some under-leveled skills, and it is critical to level up your skills to increase your power. Here’s how you can level up your skill and support gems in Path of Exile 2.

How to Level Skill Gems in Path of Exile 2

To level skill gems up, you must find Uncut Skill Gems as drops from defeating monsters and bosses. Once you have one Uncut Skill Gem, you’ll notice a Roman numeral on the lower-right corner of the gem. The number signifies its tier, and the higher the tier, the higher the skill gem can go up.

For example, if you get an Uncut Skill Gem with “V,” that means it can level up to 5. You can also make a new skill gem if you have skill gems that can’t upgrade your current ones – or save them in your stash in case you want to make another build.

Using the Uncut Skill Gem will open up a Gemcutters window where you can look for gems or upgrade existing gems to the corresponding tier level. From the Gemcutters window, you’ll see that the Uncut Skill Gem level goes all the way up to tier 13 and goes through all the odd numbers.

Can You Level Support Gems in Path of Exile 2?

As for support gems, there’s no way to upgrade them. Path of Exile 2 simplified the game by reducing the variability of support gems, for example, you can’t mess with their levels and such. All you have to think about is which support gem would better “fit” your main skill and playstyle.

You’ll still get them as Uncut Gems though. It is basically just called Uncut Support Gem, and you can choose from a wide variety of support gems.

If you are thinking of getting a support gem for a future skill gem, you should turn off the “show recommended gems” filter located in the lower-left corner of the Gemcutting window.

How to Farm Uncut Gems in Path of Exile 2

To get Uncut Skill Gems and Uncut Support Gems early, you want to look for random encounters on the map as you progress through the quests or campaign. You’ll see a small icon with a name, and all you have to do is go near it, and it’ll spawn an encounter or a boss.

Eliminating the boss will likely drop some Uncut Skill Gems and some currency and gear. However, if you already have enough skill gems, you can continue progressing as you will replace these skills frequently until you reach mapping, which is the core of Path of Exile 2’s endgame.
