One of Path of Exile 2’s best features is its amazing class system. While there are several classes to choose from, there are also subclasses or Ascendancies from each of the classes to branch out of. This allows the player to further specialize their character into a niche build using specific Ascendancy nodes that enable the whole build. For some builds, they want to ascend quickly to get a big power spike. Here’s how to ascend your class in Path of Exile 2.
How to Get Your Ascendancy in Path of Exile 2
To ascend in Path of Exile 2, you can choose between two types of trails to fully ascend your character – the Trial of the Sekhemas and the Trial of Chaos. Both trials offer different mechanics, but both of them also ultimately lead to unlocking your Ascension, ascending your class to a subclass, and giving you two Ascendancy points to spend.
If you played the first Path of Exile, these trials are basically the Eternal Labyrinth where you go through a maze and beat Izaro to unlock your ascension. However, in Path of Exile 2, the trial gives you way more content through different objectives and even a tiny roguelike mechanic in the form of Boons. These Boons give you some boosts in exchange for some Sacred Water, which is also found in the Trial of the Sekhemas.
The difficulty difference in both trials is negligible to most builds, so it is really up to you on which you want to finish. Each Trial will give you some room to path to, eventually leading you to the end to finish a boss. Most of these rooms have random mechanics, which you should read to avoid any unnecessary added difficulty to your runs.
If you fail, you will have to repeat it all over again, and these trials aren’t free either. You need a Trail of the Sekhemas Coin to enter the Trial of Sekhemas. The first chance you can attempt the Trial of Sekhemas is when you get the Balbala’s Barya, which drops from the Balbala boss in the Prison of the Disgraced in Traitor’s Passage. This first attempt will have unlimited uses, as the green text symbolizes a quest item and it’ll be mandatory to finish anyway.
Once you have done your first ascension, you’ll have to earn more Coins and attempt more Trial runs. These will get harder the more you ascend, so always keep your character’s power level high enough.

List of All Ascendancies in Path of Exile 2
There’s a total of six classes in Path of Exile 2. Each class has two Ascendancies in the early access. Here are all the Ascendancies for each class:
Class | Ascendancy | Ascendancy |
Mercenary | Witch Hunter | Gemling Legionnaire |
Monk | Invoker | Acolyte of Chayula |
Ranger | Deadeye | Pathfinder |
Sorceress | Stormweaver | Chronomancer |
Warrior | The Warbringer | The Titan |
Witch | Infernalist | Bloodmage |
Some of these are quite similar to the tried and tested classes and Ascendancies in the first game. The Ranger’s Deadeye and Pathfinder Ascendancies has been one of the most popular classes in the first game and most of their notable Ascendancy skill nodes are similar to the first game.
The others are completely new and provide interesting build concepts. It is also confirmed that there will be more classes and Ascendancies in the future and we’ll surely get more once Path of Exile 2 officially launches out of early access.
