To learn the Alohomora spell, you’ll have to progress far enough in the main story to unlock the quest “The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament”. With a level requirement of 14, it’ll take around 6-8 hours to reach this point, depending on how many side missions and other quests you do beforehand.

During this quest, you’re tasked with locating Gladwin Moon, the Hogwarts school’s caretaker, who you’ll find near the Grand Staircase Floo Flame teleporter. After discussing your recent encounter in Hogsmeade, he’ll teach you about Demiguise Moons, small statues you can only collect at night. Along the way, he’ll teach you Alohomora, leading to the spell-learning minigame that grants you access to the ability.

When you use Alohomora, a minigame will appear with rotating dials and two colored sparks. As you spin the dials, the rotating gears will turn red and green, indicating that each light is in the correct position. Your goal is to continue rotating the sparks until both gears activate and turn red/green! Once this happens, the lock will automatically open, allowing you to enter the room.

Fortunately, they don’t spike in difficulty as you approach higher-level locks. Once you learn it, you’re good for your whole playthrough!

Upgrading Alohomora

While you’ll initially start with Alohomora level one, you can unlock two more upgrades to gain access to more locked doors. Remember those Demiguise statues from earlier? They are the secret to upgrading the spell!

As you find more Demiguise Statues, you’ll gain upgrades to level two and three locks. You’ll find several statues around Hogwarts Castle, with the rest located in Hogsmeade and surrounding regions. If you’re ever unsure whether you’ve collected every Demiguise Statue in a area, hover over it on your map to find a total counter!
