How to Increase Mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2
Master of none until you master them all.
Yes, technology is back in Graveyard Keeper 2, and upgrading gears has never been more important if you truly want to see everything this game has to offer.
You’ve probably noticed that the tall trees surrounding you, Blueprints you’ve unlocked on the Tech Tree but cannot build, and scattered Ore within the Inquisition Base cannot be mined. It may have something to do with those Rusty tools you’re using. Or, it’s simply because you haven’t got a high enough Mastery Level to do anything about it yet.
Your Mastery Level determines what actions you can do, be it what you can farm, mine, fish, build, or study. Without it, you cannot get much done as the new Keeper in town. So, here’s how to increase Mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2.
Ways to Increase Mastery in Graveyard Keeper 2
There are two primary ways to increase your Mastery Level in Graveyard Keeper 2. You can refer to either the Inspirations tab on the menu or your equipment on the Character tab. These look directly at your Mastery Level. First, let’s break down how Inspirations work.
Inspirations
Inspirations are divided into five categories. These correspond to the Tech Tree, where you can use accumulated Tech Points (Green, Red, and Blue) to unlock Blueprints, recipes, and resources to expand everything in and around the Inquisition Base. You will naturally do this by completing main and side quests, but you can grind Tech Points through building, farming, performing autopsies, and studying.
Each Inspiration tab shows a list of tasks, almost like achievements, which you must do a set number of times to complete. Once the bar fills with green, it switches to a Buy button, which will either cost Faith or nothing at all. Faith is accumulated by performing Sermons inside the Church. Clicking on the Buy button transfers into a slot on the Inspiration bar beneath each category. Once the bar is full, you gain the Inspiration Point to then use on the Perks menu. Here, you can often choose to add a Mastery level to the overarching skill (i.e., Building or Metallurgy).
Buying Mastery isn’t always available, and there’s a set amount you can unlock through Inspirations. That brings us to the next way to increase your level.
Character
The other way to increase your Mastery Level (and fast) is to improve what the Keeper is using. You will see this on the Character menu. This starts with the Rusty tools you were given when you first entered the Inquisition Base. From here, you should upgrade these as soon as possible (Bronze to Iron to Steel). There’s also the Basic Rod you’re given, which you can upgrade to Amateur, then can search and invest other, more specific items found within the Tech Tree.
As the Rusty tools are handed to you, you’ll have to grind for resources and Tech Points to broaden your horizon and increase the tools you can use. Your weapon (Sword and Bow), alongside what Armor you’re wearing, aren’t relevant to Mastery, but are required for Battles. It’s your tools that you’ll want to update ASAP.

The recipes above aren’t the be-all and end-all. You should upgrade these to increase Mastery again and again as you progress through the Tech Tree. Each tool relevant to your overall Mastery Level has three upgrades (i.e., Primer → Dictionary → Glossary or Bronze Tools → Iron Tools → Steel Tools).
Of course, you can’t just get these the minute you start your adventure. You need to level up via the Tech Tree to unlock the recipes and Blueprints required to build these tools and equip them. Doing so increases your Mastery Level tremendously, allowing you to mine, farm, and create more simply by holding onto the tools you’ll need most.
