Though nowhere to be seen in Graveyard Keeper, a Sanity system rears its ugly head during your time as Keeper in the sequel.

Ditching bodies because you have no space, pulling out innards to experiment and create your very own Frankenstein’s monster, or working overtime because you’re hellbent on figuring out how fishing works in this game are all things you need to be aware of so that Keeper doesn’t go mad in this medieval Isekai.

Here’s everything you need to know about Graveyard Keeper 2‘s Sanity system.

Continuing to work while the Keeper is exhausted is a recipe for the maddest of workaholics. Your Sanity meter will replace any Energy that would normally deplete from an action. So chopping, building, digging, etc. with an exhausted Energy bar will automatically add to your Sanity meter. This slowly fills your Energy, eating it away, and stays there until you find a way to clear it. Exhaustion is different to an empty Energy bar. Look out for this symbol to know if Keeper is exhausted:

Insanity is the result of a slow process in which your blue Energy bar is replaced by Purple (brain icon), caused by doing actions that are psychologically taxing on the Keeper. These are:

  • Completing Autopsies: Extract Skin, Brain, Heart, Guts, Skull, and Bones.
  • Replacing body parts: Harvest organs and replace them on an Exhumed body to increase White Skulls or add to a zombie for increased Red Skull count.
  • Digging graves
  • Filling graves
  • Decorating graves
  • Exhuming a body
  • Using organs at the Writing Desk: Crafting Leather Scroll and Ink.
  • Getting Honey from Bee Hives

Insanity builds over time and doesn’t disappear by itself.

How to clear Sanity in Graveyard Keeper 2

Just like replenishing Energy, there are multiple ways to reduce any built-up Insanity on your meter. Both solutions have a specific affect in how much Insanity it clears. Depending on how much has built up on your Energy bar, your Sanity meter may take multiple attempts to clear. Here are all ways to clear Insanity:

  • Beer: Purchase from Januarius at the Village tavern or make your own (requires a ton of Tech Points and high Mastery Level if you choose this method).
  • Sleep: Reduces Insanity only when the exhausted symbol appears.

You can reduce Insanity buildup at any point and should not feel the need to wait until your Energy bar is more purple than blue. Otherwise, you’re using items to replenish Energy more often than you need to. Plus it just makes building and performing autopsies unnecessarily difficult. Therefore, we highly recommend that the minute the Keeper is exhausted, you return to the Inquisition Base and sleep. This guarantees you will restore a good chunk of your Energy bar without reducing Sanity any further.

Stay up for as long as you can. Wait until you see at the top of the screen. This indicates Keeper is tired and that any action you take from now on will deplete his Sanity. Use Faith at Waypoints so you can quickly fast travel from Village, Town Pier, Crossroads, or Forest. That way, you’re not spending longer than you’d like getting back home.
