The Unbound Ailment support gem shows great potential for leveling and endgame builds in Path of Exile. If you are following a build and need to look for the gem as early as possible, here’s where you can get the Unbound Ailment in Path of Exile.
Where to Get the Unbound Ailments Support Gem in Path of Exile

The Unbound Ailments support gem drops from anywhere, but you’ll rarely see them as a drop because of all the possible skill gems that can drop randomly. The best way to get the Unbound Ailment support gem is from the Caged Brute quest reward (Brutus) in Act 1. However, the reward is only given to Witch and Scion classes.
If you are not a Witch or Scion, you can buy the Unbound Ailment support gem from Nessa in Act 1 after finishing the Caged Brute quest. However, only Shadow and Templar classes can buy them this early, too.
The next unlock would come from A Fixture of Fate in Act 3. You need to find Siosa in the Library near the Imperial Gardens and finish the “A Fixture of Fate quest.” Afterwards, you can buy the gem from Siosa in the Library.
Since the Library is an optional method, you can also get it from Lilly Roth in Act 6, which unlocks after finishing the Fallen from Grace quest (Twilight Strand clear). Even if you don’t need the gem anymore, I highly suggest finishing Fallen from Grace so you can add Lilly Roth to your hideout and have access to her gem shop.

Is the Unbound Ailments Support Gem Good in Path of Exile?

The Unbound Ailments support gem empowers useful ailments from builds, amplifying their damage when used correctly. Several builds use the Unbound Ailment support gem, but the most common ones are chaos-type builds, mostly Poison. Since Chaos builds are mostly damage over time effects, their damage scales highly with percentage-based sources like debuffs and even skill gem levels (going past level 20).
Freeze, Ignited, and Shock are the common ailments caused by cold, fire, and lightning, respectively. Their alternate version, mostly popularized by the Interrogation Cluster Jewel, are Brittle, Scorched, and Sapped, respectively.
Other ailments include Poison and Bleeding, which round up almost all forms of damage since these cover chaos and physical damage types.
The Unbound Ailment support gem is strong for Poison and Bleeding builds, but since it takes up one link slot, you have to make sure that there aren’t any other support gems that provide better value than it.
Overall, Unbound Ailments is a strong support gem for Poison builds, especially when leveling a Shadow class with Viper Strike or Pathfinder poison builds.
