How to Finish the Ominous Altars Quest in Path of Exile 2

That's one long tedious quest.

Path of Exile 2 has several confusing quests. These quests look linear judging from the quest location, but you can end up getting lost on your way there anyway. One quest, in particular, is the Ominous Altar quest from Finn, where you need to search for the Freythorn above the Hunting Grounds but just can’t seem to find it. In this guide, you’ll find Freythorn’s location, learn how to beat the King of the Mists boss, and finish the Ominous Altar quest in Path of Exile 2.

How to Find Freythorn in Path of Exile 2 | Map Location

When you get the Ominous Altars quest, you should open your map and track it. It’ll highlight the location on the map. Then you’ll need to head towards the Hunting Grounds.

However, you’ll notice that there are three different pathways from the Hunting Grounds location: The Cemetery, the Farmland, and Freythorn. This makes the Hunting Grounds an enormous area to explore, making it harder to search for the Freythorn.

Go to the Hunting Grounds and look for the Ritual or Altar in the middle. The spawn might be different for each encounter as these spots are randomized. Activate that Altar in the middle, and it’ll respawn the fallen enemies near it.

Clear the Ritual Altar, and then Finn will suddenly spawn and start talking about the Freythorn. Explore the corners of the Hunting Grounds map to look for the Freythorne location. It is usually on the opposite side of the Farmland and the Cemetery.

As seen in the image above, you can see the Freythorn spot is very hidden from the whole area, and if you miss that narrow pathway, you’ll completely miss it. The Freythorn entrance should also be near a checkpoint with a boss. You can clear the boss if you want since it drops some early currency or even some skill gem levels if you still need them.

Once you are inside the Freythorn, your objective to finish the Ominous Altars quest will change. Now, you must find and cleanse all the Ritual Altars in Freythorn. Explore the map and activate every Ritual Altar – there should be three. Cleanse all these Ritual Altars, and at the last Ritual Altar, The King of the Mists boss will spawn — and this leads to an incredibly annoying fight.

How to Beat the King of the Mists in Path of Exile 2

The King of the Mists is a dangerous enemy because it’ll introduce some annoying boss mechanics you haven’t encountered yet. Thankfully, the King of the Mists has easy-to-dodge attacks.

He will summon a plague of rats that forces the player to dodge them in the arena. He also spawns a pool of boiling blood on the floor that inflicts physical damage over time when you step on it. Most of these attacks force you to avoid certain areas of the map, and you only have to be aware of these temporary spots every now and then.

When fighting the King of the Mists, you should always move and attack so you are constantly dodging. Since he also has some random attacks, it is best to always keep moving.

The biggest mechanic you need to learn is the Ritual of Dance and Ritual of Meditation debuffs. During the fight, you’ll occasionally see some effigies or altars being spawned. If you are constantly attacking with an AoE skill, you might have missed these as you might be unknowingly destroying them.

These effigies will cast the Ritual of Dance or Ritual of Meditation debuffs on you. When you get cursed by the Ritual of Dance, you have to keep moving, or you will get imprisoned. If you get the Ritual of Meditation debuff, you have to stop moving, or you will get imprisoned. The debuff lasts for eight seconds, making it extremely hard to follow these rules.

Once you get the King of the Mists to 20% health, he will move to the side and become immune. He will completely regenerate his whole health bar and start phase 2.

During phase 2, he throws a slow orb projectile that goes to your last spot from when the projectile was released, meaning you can literally just move a few steps away after the cast to dodge the slow projectile.

However, If you are forced to stop due to the debuff mentioned before, you might get hit by that slow projectile that deals massive damage. So you’ll have to keep destroying the effigies and try to avoid getting imprisoned. Keep doing what you were doing in phase 1, but remember to keep dodging the purple orb projectile.

Once you beat the boss, you can visit Finn in the encampment to get your reward, which is your first charm. Remember to get the rewards from the Ritual Altar before returning to town.

If you played the first Path of Exile game, the King of the Mists is almost an exact replica of the King of the Mists boss fight mechanics in the Viridian Wildwood encounter.
