How to Complete the Sunken Maw Quest in Octopath Traveler 2

A legend reduced to sashimi

If there’s one thing characters in video games love to do, it’s eat weird things. And, conveniently, those characters are almost always too weak to get that bizarre ingredient for themselves. Such is the case for the side story, A Devilishly Delicious Dish, which is just vague enough to need a guide dedicated to it. Here’s how to complete the Sunken Maw Quest in Octopath Traveler 2.

If you’ve wandered into the tavern in New Delsta, you’ve likely encountered the Tavern Cook. This deeply misguided man wants to cook a “Delsta Devil”, which is a creature that can be found in a cave out east.

The cave he’s referring to, of course, is the Sunken Maw, which can be a little difficult to locate. To get to it, head to Clockbank City. From there, exit south and immediately load you and your crew onto a canoe on the nearby pier.

Guide your canoe convoy to the left and you’ll soon be on Western Clockbank Highroad. Eventually, the river will open up and allow for multiple paths. But we want to go south. Sail beneath the large bridge, and you’ll soon be at the entrance of the Sunken Maw.

While you might have picked up this quest early on, the Sunken Maw has a recommended Level of 34, and so does the Delsta Devil.

Once you’re in the Sunken Maw, head down to the very bottom of the cave. But when you see the save point on the river, stop there and climb the ladder. At the very top, you’ll find a shack and an old man within. This old man, aptly called the Elderly Fishing Enthusiast, informs you that you’ll need “Special Bait” in order to lure the Delsta Devil to you.

Fortunately, he happens to have Special Bait on him. Not that he’ll tell you that. Purchase, Entreat, Mug, or Steal the item from the Fishing Enthusiast.

Head back down the ladder and jump back on the boat. Turn right, and you’ll see a shadow of a giant fish on the water. As you approach it, you’ll get the prompt: You glimpse the form of a giant fish… Use the special bait?

Do so, and you’ll face off against the Delsta Devil… which looks suspiciously similar to the Battle-Worn Shark.

The Delsta Devil has 5,700 HP and is weak to polearms, daggers, bows, and electricity. Once you defeat it, you’ll get a notification that you’ve captured the Delsta Devil. Bring this poor giant fish back to the Tavern Cook in New Delsta.

With the Devil on the menu, the tavern will have sensational sales, and the Tavern Cook will reward you with 5,000 leaves and the unique weapons Master Rod and Chef’s Ladle.
