How to Select a Different Difficulty World Tier in Diablo 4

There are two ways to change your difficulty in Diablo 4:

  • Change your World Tier through the Character Select Screen
  • Visit a World Tier statue ingame

While going to the character select menu lets you change your difficulty quickly and easily, you can also go to a statue if you’re already in the game and don’t want to leave.

Where to Find World Tier Statues in Diablo 4

You’ll find the first World Tier statue in Kyovashad, just northeast of the Waypoint teleporter. After reaching level five or so, you’ll visit this town early in your playthrough. The World Tier statue appears as a large, gold-filled structure you can interact with to view the available difficulty levels.

Once you interact with the statue, you’ll see a list of four difficulty levels, ranging from Adventurer to Torment. Only the first two are available when you start, but after progressing through the campaign, you’ll unlock the other two to challenge yourself!

Each world tier scales the difficulty of enemies but provides increased experience, gold, and unique item drops. If you want the rarest and most powerful equipment in the game, upgrading to Nightmare and Torment is the way to go. If you’re looking for a more casual playthrough, it’s worth sticking to Adventurer or Veteran.

How to Change Your Difficulty Through the Character Menu in Diablo 4

An alternative way to change your difficulty is by heading into the character selection menu and selecting “Change World Tier.” By clicking this, you’ll see the same world tier options as you would ingame and can pick a different difficulty before logging back in.

If you’re ingame and want to go to character selection, make sure you choose “leave game” rather than “exit Diablo IV” to avoid any potential queues!

All Difficulty World Tiers in Diablo 4

When you first start Diablo 4, you can access two world tiers: Adventurer and Veteran. While Adventurer is the easiest, requiring minimal challenge to defeat enemies, Veteran is slightly more difficult and nets you increase rewards. For more details on which one to pick and their benefits, check out whether you should play on World Tier 1 or 2 in Diablo 4!

After completing the campaign and Cathedral of Light Capstone Dungeon as a Veteran, you’ll unlock Nightmare or World Tier 3. Likewise, you’ll have to clear the Fallen Temple Capstone Dungeon with a Nightmare character to gain the fourth tier.
