How to Catch Largemouth Bass in Stardew Valley

If you want to experience everything Stardew Valley has to offer, you’re going to spend a lot of time casting your line in a variety of bodies of water, hoping to catch all different types of fish. But one fish eludes players, especially if they’re new at the fishing game.

The large mouth bass is a fish that can be caught exclusively in the mountain lake near the mines in Stardew Valley. Fortunately, it can be caught during all seasons, from dawn to dusk, but your best chance of finding it is during the more mellow seasons of Spring and Fall, where your chance of catching largemouth bass is 1 in 5. Your chances of catching a largemouth bass drop to only 15% in the summer and winter.

But even if you’re fishing in the mountain lake, there’s a chance you won’t encounter a largemouth bass. That’s because you’ll need at least the bamboo pole, which is a step up from the training rod you start the game with. The bamboo pole can be obtained by completing the early game quest ‘To the Beach’, at which point Willy will give you the bamboo pole for free. And if you accidentally throw away your bamboo pole, you can always purchase it from him again for 500 gold.

If you find that you’re struggling to catch the largemouth bass, it’s a good idea to upgrade your rod. Each rod upgrade makes catching fish a little easier. The Fiberglass rod can be purchased from Willy for 1,800 gold once you reach fishing level 2, but the Iridium Rod is even better, as you can equip bait and tackle to it. This will increase your odds of encountering fish and make those fish easier to catch. I recommend the Cork Bobber, which will increase the fishing bar size.

Increasing your fishing level and eventually mastering it will also unlock Gold Fishing Chests, which have a chance of containing Prize Tickets. Making fishing the easiest way to empty out Mayor Lewis’ Prize Box in the late game!
