How to Capture a Monster in Monster Hunter: World

Before embarking on your capturing quest, you’ll need to ensure that you have at least one of each of the following two items:

  • A Trap.
  • A Tranquilizer.

In the images above, I created a Shock Trap, which helps keep the monster in place while you’re trying to use any sort of Tranquilizer on it, as well as Tranq Bombs, which deliver the final blow in the capture process. If you’re using a class with ammunition, you can use the Tranq Bullets, which will let you put them down from a distance.

Once you know which Monster you’d like to capture, it’s time to embark on a new mission or an Expedition to learn more about the lands you’re currently in. For my example, I went to the Coral Highlands, as I not only needed extra Aquacore Ore, but I could use some spare Tzitzi-Ya-Ku parts.

While you may be capturing them, you’ll still need to partake in the hunt process for these Monsters. After finding the Tzitzi, I had to inflict enough damage to it so it would begin limping. This process can take some time, as each monster has a different threshold for damage, but it took about five minutes before I could see a visible change in how the Monster would walk away to a new area. If you notice that your Hunt begins limping when changing areas, it’s time to start the capture process.

Continue following the creature you’re hunting until you reach your final destination. If they’re limping and you take too long to get to this spot, they may heal up enough that your trap will not work, so make sure that you’re staying hot on their heels to avoid any sort of issues with the trap that you’re trying to use. You’re given a provisional Capture Net, but I’ve found that those can be hit or miss, so I decided to craft the Shock Trap as shown in the first set of photos.

Find a good area that will work for your trap, and set it on the ground. Before charging in after your creature of choice, make sure that you equip your Tranq item, as you may find that they can break out of your traps if they’re extremely angry. Once you receive the notification on the side of your screen that the trap has been activated, move in for the final blow.

Get close and use the Item button on your controller to drop the Tranq Bombs, or use the triggers to use your Gun and shoot the Monster with your Tranq bullets. If it was successful, you’ll see a notification pop up on the right side of the screen saying that the monster has been Captured. Congrats, at this point, you can continue on the hunt for more creatures, or leave the expedition to claim your rewards. Don’t forget to use Photo Mode to capture a picture of your prized possession.

Why Should You Capture Monsters in Monster Hunter: World?

Depending on the monster, you may find that capturing them drastically reduces the time that you’ll spend on the battlefield trying to hunt and slay them. If you’re in a rush, it’s going to be quicker and more efficient to capture these creatures rather than kill every Monster that you come across. If you’re farming for materials, you’ll find that you can shave off a decent chunk of time by using this method. You’ll receive the same amount of items from killing them compared to capturing them, so why not save some time and effort overall?
