The easiest way to defeat Yurgir is to persuade him to eliminate his minions, displacer, and himself. By passing various persuasive dialogue checks, you can get him to do the deed himself without you dealing a single point of damage, allowing you to progress through the quest as usual.

Fortunately, even if you fail one of the dice rolls, you can still use this to defeat his minions or Nessa, the displacer pet, giving you a slight advantage in your fight against him.

If you miss the chance to convince Yurgir to eliminate himself or fail the persuasion checks, you’ll have to battle Yurgir and his minions, with them having a height advantage. Ideally, you want to defeat his minions and Nessa through dialogue. However, if you have to fight them all, you can still defeat them with some careful planning.

There are three main combat features Yurgir has that you’ll want to watch out for:

  • Invisibility
  • Hand bombs
  • High-damage regular attacks

He’ll frequently cast invisibility on himself, making it difficult to target him and watch his movements around the map. On top of this, he and his minions throw hand bombs that can easily wipe your team if you’re in their explosion radius. In cases where you survive this, he can use his crossbow or regular attacks on you and inflict serious damage.

Tip:

Be sure to use characters like Karlach to throw bombs back at Yurgir and his allies to damage them!

Furthermore, if Nessa is still alive, you’ll want to focus on her first before targeting Yurgir. Likewise, defeating his minions using AoE attacks will help you avoid taking damage from several small enemies. After all, while they’re weaker than Yurgir individually, their combined strength can easily overwhelm your party.

Part of your strategy will include using spells, weapons, or items that can reveal hidden enemies so you can counter his invisibility, with some examples including Faerie Fire, Cloud of Daggers, and Glyph of Warding. Countering his invisibility is a crucial part of the fight, as it’ll help you bombard him with damage during your turn in between dealing with his minions and bombs.

From here, defeating him becomes a matter of throwing his bombs back at him or avoiding them as much as possible before continuing to damage him. After some time, you’ll eventually defeat Yurgir and his minions, allowing you to loot his body for a powerful crossbow before progressing through the rest of the area.
