How to Scuttle Your Ship in Sea of Thieves

Stuck and can’t get your ship out? Learn how to scuttle your ship and start anew.
This article is over 6 years old and may contain outdated information

Sea of Thieves has a massive open world for players to explore and as you travel from island to island, you’re going to come across multiple obstacles along the way, including things like sandbars, rocks, and even other ships. If you find yourself in a bind, or find your ship stuck on something, you can choose to scuttle it and start over. Here’s what you need to know about scuttling your ship.

What does Scuttle Mean?

Scuttle means to sink your ship deliberately. In Sea of Thieves, players have the option to scuttle their ship from the My Crew section of the pause menu. It’s a useful option if you can’t get your ship unstuck, however, it should be used as a last resort as it does completely reset your ship and can cause you to lose any treasures or other items you have onboard.

Scuttling your ship causes it to sink.

During your voyages something that can’t be undone is bound to happen—we’ve seen sailors get their ships wedged in between rocks and even on outpost docks. Scuttling your ship allows you to start over, giving you and your crew a chance at a fresh start.

How to Scuttle Your Ship

Like putting people in the brig, scuttling your ship requires agreement from the various members of your crew. You’ll need the majority to vote on the scuttle, which can be done from the My Crew menu of your pause menu. Once the vote has been cast, the ship will start to sink, sending any items onboard into the sea. You can try to collect these items, but there is no guarantee that your new ship will spawn at the same outpost.

A majority of crew members must vote to scuttle the ship.

When the ship has completely sank and vanished among the waves, a mermaid or merman should appear nearby to teleport you to your newly finished ship. This may put you at another outpost or area, so make sure you try not to scuttle your ship when you have treasure and items onboard, as you may not be able to get them back—as you cannot teleport with them.

Use the mermaid that spawns to teleport to your new ship.

There isn’t much else to know about scuttling your ship in Sea of Thieves. Again, this feature should only be used as a last resort if your ship is stuck or unable to continue further in any fashion.
