As with any game set during the end of human civilization, there is a ton of combat in The Last of Us Part 2. As players make their way through the game and unlock different weapons, they’ll need to know how to switch and change weapons on a dime if they plan to survive. In this guide, we will show you everything you need to know about changing weapons in The Last of Us Part 2.
The Last of Us Part 2: How to Change and Swap Weapons
If you played the original game, then you’ll likely be very familiar with how to change weapons, as it’s exactly the same. However, if you’re new to the series or have simply forgotten the process, allow us to explain. To change weapons in The Last of Us Part 2, you’ll need to use the left and right d-pad. Specifically, using the right d-pad will allow you to switch between your pistols and the left d-pad will allow you to switch between your heavier weapons like shotguns and rifles. If you want to change from a weapon to a brick, bottle, or explosive, press down on the d-pad.
If you’d like to swap the weapons that appear on your d-pad, you can hold square while you’re hovering over a specific type of weapon to change to a different one. For example, if you want to swap out your pistol for a different one, press right on the d-pad and then hold square. This will bring up a menu that will allow you to rotate through your available weapons and change what you’re carrying. If you want to swap out a shotgun or rifle, press left on the d-pad and follow the same steps as above. Additionally, if you’d like to change the type of ammo or add a silencer to a weapon, you can do so with the triangle button while in the weapon menu.

As you progress through the game, eventually you’ll be able to carry two of each weapon, meaning you can have two pistols and two heavy weapons available in the d-pad menu. To change between those, you can press left/right on the d-pad twice to quickly access all four weapons. Further, if you want to swap one of the weapons in the slot, just highlight it and press square on your controller.
