It seems that AI is everywhere, even in our favorite video games, and it’s becoming more and more difficult to tell what was made by humans or machines. Does Foamstars use AI, and if so, what is it used for?
Did Square Enix Use AI in Foamstars?
When it comes to the use of AI within the world of Foamstars, it has been confirmed through an exclusive interview with VGC Editor-in-Chief Andy Robinson that the Splatoon-inspired shooter does feature AI art — but not for any of the major in-game material. During the interview, which can be read here, Square Enix clarified the AI art claims further by explaining what they used the AI tool Midjourney for;
“In this instance, we experimented with Midjourney using simple prompts to produce abstract images. We loved what was created and used them as the final album covers players will see in the game. Everything else was created entirely by our development team.”

In this particular instance, AI-created album covers had been created to help bring some additional life to the world of Foamstars, while the character art, gameplay elements, and everything in between had been created by hand by the development team at Toylogic.
This means that none of the paid items in the Premium Season Pass will have AI elements used, as the Albums are gathered in-game by leveling up and completing Single-Player Missions.
Are Characters Voiced By AI in Foamstars?
Thankfully, it appears that the only thing that is affected by AI in Foamstars is the Album Covers. Every character in Foamstars is voiced by a human being, so there are no worries on that end. Other Square Enix games are using AI for more than art, such as THE PORTOPIA SERIAL MURDER CASE, but Foamstars is confirmed to not be using AI for anything beyond the originally stated intent and purpose. Breathe easy — everyone on the team is human, and I’m glad to hear that fact.
