How to Get A Light in the Dark Exotic Quest

Getting the A Light in the Dark Exotic quest is actually more challenging than completing the quest itself. This item drops randomly throughout the game, so there isn’t a guaranteed way to get it, like we had with the Khvostov 7G-0X, or the new Year 3 Gjallarhorn. Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways you can try to up your chances. We’ve seen a lot of reports of Guardians getting this bounty to drop for them when they have turned in a lot of Bounties. Because of this, we suggest giving it a try. Complete your Bounties, but don’t turn them in just yet. Wait until you have a whole slew of them stockpiled, and then start turning them in to see if you get lucky enough to get this drop. It isn’t an exact science, but it’s better than nothing.

How to Complete A Light in the Dark

Next you will have to actually complete the quest. There are several steps involved, and while it is a bit long-winded, this time around getting the Thorn isn’t nearly as hard as it was in Destiny Year 1. To complete this bounty, and obtain the Year 3 Thorn, you will need to:

  • Run the Wretched Eye Strike
  • Kill Fallen in the Plaguelands
  • Kill players in the Crucible with Void weapons.
  • Consume 5 Motes of Light to ‘cleanse the darkness’ from the weapon.
  • Use a Skeleton Key in the chest at the end of the revamped Abomonication Heist Strike (revamped Phogoth strike).

Once you complete the objectives above, you will receive this item and be able to hop into Crucible or PVE events and show off your shiny new Exotic Hand Cannon.

A Light in the Dark Walkthrough

Completing this quest is pretty straightforward. Once the A Light in the Dark Exotic quest drops for you, you’ll be tasked with completing The Wretched Eye, Destiny: Rise of Irons completely new strike. You can complete it on any difficulty, so we suggest just running through it on Level 38. It’s not very hard to complete, and should only take you around twenty or so minutes to finish.

After the strike you will need to complete the quest step Harvest of the Lesser. This requires you to Fallen in the Plaguelands. There isn’t an exact number tied to this, though the community speculates it takes around 500 kills to fill the meter. Once you’ve finished it up, head into the Crucible to take on the next step, Feast Upon the Light.

This next quest step requires you to head into the Crucible, which is Destiny’s PVP area, and kill 125 players using Void elemental weapons. We suggest running with a Void Special and Heavy weapon, and a Void Primary if you happen to have one. There are a few Year 1 Primaries that feature Void, however, they’re pretty underpowered so don’t try to get these kills using them in Trials or Iron Banner. Your Void-based Subclass abilities will also count, so be sure to have them equipped as well.

Once you finish the Crucible based part of this quest, and have taken down 125 players, it’s time to head into the last stretch of this quest. You’ll need five Motes of Light to continue. Just open up your inventory and use five Motes to cleanse the weapon and move onto the last step. From here all you need to do is complete the revamped Summoning Pits strike, Abomination Heist. Once you complete it you’ll have to open up the chest at the end using a Skeleton Key. If you don’t already have one there are a few ways you can get one. Either:

  • Complete strikes until one drops.
  • Switch to a different character and complete the Destiny: Rise of Iron questNone are Perfect to receive a Skeleton Key that you can use in the chest at the end of the strike.

Once you’ve finished the Abomination Heist strike, and opened up the chest, you will receive the Year 3 variation of the Thorn Exotic Hand Cannon.
