Can You Use a Fishing Rod?

The short answer here: no. Unlike the original Pokémon games, Pokémon: Let’s Go does not include a Fishing Rod that players will need to find and use to catch water-type Pokémon. Instead, you’ll need to unlock a secret technique call Sea Skim in order to travel on water and be able to catch water-type Pokémon in Pokémon: Let’s Go.

Using Sea Skim will allow players to travel across watery terrain, encountering various water-type Pokémon along the way. This is the only way to travel the watery areas in Pokémon: Let’s Go manually, and you’ll have plenty of chances to catch Pokémon as you do so. To unlock this technique, you’re going to need to make your way to Fuchsia City where you can head over to the GO Park Complex. This is where you’ll transfer Pokémon from Pokémon GO. Nearby you can find a man hanging near a Lapras and a surf board. Talking to the man will allow you to learn the Sea Skim technique, which you can teach to either Eevee or Pikachu, depending on which version of the game you purchased.

Now that you’ve learned about Sea Skim, and don’t have to worry about Fishing Rods, make sure you head out there and start catching your favorite water-type Pokémon. You can also return to our Pokémon: Let’s Go guide for even more in-depth and helpful information about the game.
