Nearly every modern-themed Call of Duty game has an M4 weapon that shreds through the opposition, and Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t aim to change that trend. It’s no surprise that the classic assault rifle has ended up in the meta once again, and you’re bound to see it constantly in competitive matches.
For those planning to run Game Battles, scrims, or ranked in the future, you’ll need a loadout that follows the rules and can compete against other weapons. You can bet that your opponents will have the best attachments possible, so you’ll need to stay up to date; our loadout guide aims to keep you in the loop with the M4 in MW2.
Modern Warfare 2 – Best Competitive M4 Loadout
Remember that the attachments you see here may be better in casual matches. Many attachments in competitive settings are banned, and those will not be listed here. Every attachment you need for this loadout can be found below and will still work in a casual game.
- Receiver: M4
- Barrel: Hightower 20″ Barrel
- Muzzle: FTAC Castle Comp
- Underbarrel: Merc Foregrip
- Rear Grip: XTEN Grip
- Ammunition: 5.56 High Velocity
Our first two attachments are essential and can also be found in any pubs loadout. The M4 needs the Hightower 20″ Barrel and the FTAC Castle Comp to perform at its peak. Recoil control, damage range, and bullet velocity are integral to the weapon’s effectiveness in Modern Warfare 2.

The grip attachments are the next additions needed for the loadout, and they serve two very different purposes. We want the Merc Foregrip mainly for the recoil control, but the hip fire component is also a primary key. When you fire as you ADS, that hip fire accuracy will kick in, and you can land a shot or two before your sight even lines up. Then the XTEN Grip will ensure that the ADS speed on the M4 is even faster.
To end the loadout, we want the 5.56 High Velocity ammunition for the competitive M4 in Modern Warfare 2. These bullets will add far more velocity, which makes shots even faster. Make sure to tune the damage range and velocity to max on either side, though, or else you won’t get the full benefits.
