Movies have a pretty terrible track record of trying to capture the magic of video games. Often they fall flat or completely change what the source material great.
Free Guy is a movie in which Ryan Reynolds plays an average NPC in an open-world game. You know, the ones that usually get hit by cars or shot with rockets. It’s a comedy about when an NPC learns they are, in fact, inside of a video game, and everything they have known about the world is a lie.

You can check out the crazy new trailer right below. We’re hopeful that this movie can help change some people’s perspectives on video game movies.
The new trailer showcases an emphasis on the story and some of the shenanigans you can expect Ryan Reynolds and crew to get into along the journey. It’s nice to see a movie about video games, rather than trying to adapt an existing one.
The Youtube Description on the trailer reads as follows.
“In Twentieth Century Studios’ epic adventure-comedy “Free Guy,” a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.
Starring Ryan Reynolds, Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi,”
Free Guy releases on December 11, 2020. It states that it will be releasing in theaters, but as we all know, that may not be the case. It has not been announced whether or not this will be on streaming services in the near future as movie theaters still try to work out fully re-opening.
We look forward to seeing it in the coming few months, but what about you?
