TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight Coming to Steam Later This Spring

We’re inching closer and closer to the release of TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight, with developer nocras and PLAYISM announcing that the game will hit Steam around Q2 2021.

The game’s landscapes may feel visually familiar, and if that’s the case, it’s because they come courtesy of nocras, a Japanese game industry veteran who contributed art and design work to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, and Pokemon Sword & Shield.

“I’ve contributed to so many great games, but I always found something compelling about the Nintendo 64 era of platformers,” nocras explained in a quote provided in the game’s press release. “I wanted to make something that felt like what those games felt like while artistically exploring Far Eastern themes that always intrigued me.”

Looking at TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight, there are aspects of the game that immediately feel reminiscent of classic action-RPGs and nostalgic platformers, which makes sense as the press release confirming the game’s Q2 2021 release date notes:

“Double jump, mid-air dash, and earn collectibles to assist the cute and endearing cats of the Nezu Tribe in this loving homage to late-’90s platformers and East Asian culture.”

TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight also gives off a bit of a Steampunk vibe in regards to its world and the fact that the main character Yukumo uses an airship to travel around and explore.

On Steam, the official description for TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight is as follows:

“Yukumo is a young girl who travels around in her airship, her pride and joy. When visiting a particular Far Eastern town to run some errands her airship suddenly breaks down.

She decides to explore the town to search for parts for repair; however, the town has fallen silent with no trace of the people who live there, the only inhabitants being a strange cat-like species…

TASOMACHI is an adventure game in which you can freely explore a Far Eastern Fantasy town. You will control Yukumo as you explore the mysterious town, clear dungeons and collect items in order to fix your broken down airship.”

Towards the bottom of this description, it’s noted:

“TASOGARE NI NEMURU MACHI (TASOMACHI) in Japanese means ‘A city sleeping in twilight.'”

In regards to gameplay, the press release describes TASOMACHI as a 3D platformer where you can explore, collect items, partake in some platforming, and complete quests for NPCs.

Collecting items is key as you’ll be able to gradually repair Yukumo’s airship, earn upgrades, and unlock outfits.

The press release also mentions the game will have a soundtrack from Ujico*/Snail’s House and provides a link to Ujico’s YouTube channel where you can listen to some of their previous works ahead of the release of TASOMACHI.

If you’re as captivated by TASOMACHI: Behind the Twilight as we are, be sure to add the game to your Steam wishlist, and keep an eye out for the game’s release later this Spring.
