That’s a whole lot of zombies.

There’s money to be made in downloadable releases.  Xbox Live has seen its fair share of successes, between such games as Castle Crashers, Super Meat Boy and Trials Evolution.  Now Undead Labs’ State of Decay happily joins the group.

The game managed to move over 250,000 downloads within the first 48 hours of release, setting a new sales record on the service.  Of course, being able to kill zombies while rescuing survivors in an open-world environment certainly has something to do with its appeal, but the number’s still impressive compared to equally great games.

On Undead Labs’ blog, the studio thanked its fans.  “This was you. We did not have an ad budget. We didn’t have a physical copy to load onto shelves, no worldwide multimedia push, no studio reputation with millions of followers. All we had was what we believed was a great game and a great community. And make no mistake, a solid game is not enough, not in 2013. Plenty of great games wither away in obscurity. This train got rolling because you got out and pushed.”

State of Decay is available now on Xbox Live Arcade for $19.99.
