Even though Nintendo hasn’t made too many 3D Classics for its 3DS handheld as of late, Sega is easily picking up the slack by reproducing a number of Sega Genesis favorites for the system in the third dimension. They’ve given the 3D treatment to Space Harrier and Super Hang-On and now it’s and added a hedgehog to the bunch.
Sega of Japan has confirmed that the original Sonic the Hedgehog, the 16-bit darling that made the Genesis soar in its heyday, is coming to the 3DS this month…in Japan, at least. The game will still have the classic gameplay and nostalgic presentation we’ve all come to know and love, but with a stereoscopic 3D twist that will truly make it stand out.
The game is slated for release on May 15th in Japan for 600 yen ($6), but there’s no word on a U.S. release as of yet. Considering Sonic’s worldwide popularity it’s just a matter of time before he speeds his way here. We’ll keep you informed once Sega announces it.
