PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds dominated 2017 as one of the most popular multiplayer games of the year. In a new blog post today, the team at PUBG Corp. unveiled their PUBG Roadmap for 2018, detailing what’s in store in the year ahead for the hit battle royale shooter. New maps, vehicles, emotes, and modes are among the many new features lined up for 2018, and the developers encourage players to get involved with the development process by joining the test servers.

One of the major features coming to PUBG in 2018 is a new 4x4km island map, which will be available for players to try out on PUBG’s Experimental Test Server next month. The map is smaller than Erangel, the main island map in PUBG, making for more fast-paced, shorter matches. A second, larger map is in the works as well, measuring in at 8x8km in size. As with the smaller island, the 8x8km map will be headed to the test servers as well.

PUBG is also getting a new emote system, which makes sense considering the popularity of emotes in games like Fortnite Battle Royale. Emotes will arrive on the PUBG test servers soon and will gradually release throughout the year.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has been working toward breaking ground in the realm of esports as well. Since the implementation of the 3D Replay System in PUBG a few months ago, PUBG Corp. has been working to improve the live spectator tool to meet the demands of esports in the future.

PUBG is looking to further expand its Custom Game System to allow for quality of life improvements, such as save presets. Access to Custom Games will also be distributed to a broader number of players to expand the pool of custom matches available.

Here’s some of the other new features that PUBG has planned for the coming year, most of which will be available first on the test servers:

  • Achievements
  • An in-game friends list
  • Squad voice chat within the main menu
  • Limb and vehicle bullet penetration
  • Overhaul of the parachuting system
  • Overhaul of the entire TPP and FPP animation systems
  • Increased vehicle sound detail
  • Changes to player movement sounds

While this is quite an extensive list of new features, PLAYERUKNOWN emphasized that this list is not exhaustive of what’s in store for 2018. Although no specific release dates were mentioned in the blog post, we can probably expect to see some of these new features crop up on the test servers as early as next month.
