New Starfighters Coming to Star Wars: Squadrons

Two free content updates are in the works for Star Wars: Squadrons according to an announcement today from Electronic Arts and developer Motive Studios. One update is for November, while the other will be a December update.

Included in this back-to-back free content update goodness are two brand new starfighters, a new multiplayer map, and more. 

New Starfighters Coming to Star Wars: Squadrons

Star Wars: Squadrons is getting two free content updates. The first content update will be released on November 25 and will introduce the new map, Fostar Haven, to the game’s multiplayer component.

In the announcement post from Electronic Arts, Fostar Haven’s addition to multiplayer is described as follows: 

“We’re adding a new map to multiplayer! A fan-favorite location from the single-player story and one we’ve seen requested for multiplayer is Fostar Haven from the game’s first prologue mission. In this update, the map will be added to Fleet Battles and the Dogfight mode.” 

Electronic Arts goes on to elaborate upon how the Fostar Haven map from the game’s story mode to provide “a new experience that should fit well with the other six maps” in multiplayer.

The November 25 update will also add four new components to Star Wars: Squadrons. To start, Bombers and Fighters will be able to use the Boost Extension Kit component that, as its name suggests, gives you a full boost. 

Adding to this, you can recharge your boost and use it again after it finishes recharging. Bombers and Fighters are also getting the Prototype Piercing Torpedoes component that do less damage than others of their class, but can bypass capital ship and flagship shields.

For Fighters and Interceptors, the Ion Rockets component is being added that are similar to their current Barrage Rockets. 

“These will be great for hit-and-run attacks to strip enemy shields,” Electronic Arts explained. “These rockets move at half the speed of standard rockets, but they can be used at the same time as other components, including their non-ion counterparts. Time them well for best results.”

If you’re a fan of the TIE reaper and U-wing, you can look forward to the addition of the Anti-Material Rocket Turret component.

This component won’t target enemy starfighters, but is instead designed to tackle flagship subsystems, capital ships, turrets, and other deployables from enemy support ships according to Electronic Arts. 

If a new multiplayer map and four new components aren’t enough, Star Wars: Squadrons is getting another update in December that adds… wait for it… two new starfighters! That’s right, Star Wars: Squadrons will get not one, but two brand new starfighters to play around with.

For the New Republic, gamers will see the addition of the “Blade Wing” or A/SF-01 B-wing. Electronic Arts notes that a cosmetic variant of the B-wing from Episode VI will also be available in Star Wars: Squadrons.

“Design as the ‘Blade Wing’ prototype by Mon Calamari engineer Quarrie and finely tuned under General Hera Syndulla’s guidance, the A/SF-01 B-wing starfighter makes its way to the New Republic’s fleet in this update.”

Electronic Arts goes on to talk about the new addition to the Imperial Navy, the TIE/d “Defender” starfighter. 

“From the mind of the brilliant military tactician Grand Admiral Thrawn and Sienar Fleet Systems, the TIE/d ‘Defender’ multi-role starfighter will join the Imperial Navy as well.” 

The A/SF-01 B-wing will be a Bomber-class starfighter in Star Wars: Squadrons, while the TIE defender will be a Fighter. Both of these new starships will be balanced so as to not be over or underpowered. 

Last, but certainly not least, the December update will add custom matches to the game.

“There’s something that’s been greatly requested to be an addition to the game: custom matches! We were so excited from the moment we heard about your community-run tournaments to actually getting them in action, so we knew this was something we had to provide in some way,” Electronic Arts confirmed.

“Custom matches will allow one to five players per side across two teams to play on any of the (now) seven maps in both Dogfight and Fleet Battles. There will also be some additional restrictions and modifiers that you can change. These include things like hull/shield/damage modifiers, changing capital ship health, restricting certain starfighters, and other tools to help you change how you play. With this, there will also be a custom matches server browser for you to search through private matches made by your friends as well as public ones made by strangers.”
