Minecraft Sells Over 17.5 Million Units

The fun little indie hit has proven to be a big success for Mojang.

It’s funny how something as simple as a 3D 8-bit art styled creation game can get so many users in such a short amount of time.

Ever since its release on the PC and Mac front, Minecraft has become a huge success for the folks over at Mojang.  Those versions have combined for a total of 8.3 million sales, a huge number considering the other hits on the computer gaming market.

Along with that, the Xbox Live Arcade version has done remarkably well, selling 4.48 million units and registering as Microsoft’s most popular downloadable game to date.  All in all, with the handheld versions of the game and other editions, it’s cleared 17.5 million units sold thus far.  And it isn’t done yet, with new expansions coming that include animal breeding, a new mushroom biome and experience points – all of which are coming to the XBLA version, and probably the others as well.

Congrats to Notch on a bonafide hit.  We can has sequel?
