Minecraft Cleans Up Killer Sales On Christmas Eve

Those gift-givers really like to build stuff in Notch's world. Over 450,000 worth.

Usually Christmas time is a great opportunity for game companies to get more products out to folks through sales, as well as gift giving.  But even the team at Mojang probably couldn’t have anticipated how well Minecraft would do on a single day.

According to reports from the company, the game cleared 453,000 copies sold in just one day – Christmas Eve.  That counts for sales of the game in general, including those given out as gifts.

The game’s creator, Markus “Notch” Persson, stated on Twitter, “Across all platforms, Minecraft sold 453 k copies on dec 24!  Wowzers!”

Thus far, the game has had immense success, selling 8.7 million copies on PC as well as 4 million on Xbox Live Arcade, as well as 5 million units on the mobile front.  That’s over 18 million in all.

Congrats to Mojang and “Notch”, and here’s hoping 2013 continues the trend with more add-ons for fans to enjoy!
