God of War Laufey Confirmed for Disc, Hinting at a Pre-2028 Release

PlayStation has caught a lot of flak for its recent announcement that it will discontinue physical discs in 2028. This has led fans to express their disappointment on practically every piece of social media marketing material from PlayStation and its studios.

Santa Monica Studio has addressed the elephant in the room by confirming that God of War Laufey will, in fact, release on physical discs, a detail that also hints at its unannounced release date.

Physical Release for God of War Laufey Confirmed

Sony Santa Monica Studio announced on X (formerly Twitter) that members of the God of War Laufey team will appear at San Diego Comic-Con. As expected, their comments were flooded with fans’ comments about PlayStation ending physical releases. However, their account replied in the same post confirming that God of War Laufey will be available on disc as well.

This confirmation is reassuring for a number of reasons. First, this means that God of War Laufey will be released as a physical title, so there is a tangible product you can own, lend, and sell if you want. Second, it also confirms that God of War Laufey is releasing before January 2028, as that’s the month Sony will discontinue production of physical discs for new releases. Early 2027 might actually be a safe bet for the upcoming release, but it’s definitely aiming for that release year.

It’s bittersweet that Laufey will be the studio’s last physical release, but I’m glad it can be added to your physical collection of the God of War series rather than relegated to a digital copy. The title is a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will not be available on PC for the foreseeable future.
