Gearbox Responds to Assault Allegations Following Borderlands 3 Casting Controversy

by Liana Ruppert

David Eddings made headlines when he responded to a fan inquiring about why he wasn’t reprising his role as Claptrap in Borderlands 3 with a less than pretty picture of Gearbox and how they handle voice talent. On the heels of a similar sentiment voiced by Rhys actor Troy Baker, the original claims were enough to draw Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford out and onto Twitter by calling Eddings “bitter and disgruntled.” Since then, Eddings revealed a shocking revelation when he alleged that he was physically assaulted by Pitchford himself, and now Gearbox has issued a response regarding the resulting lawsuit.

Gearbox told PC Gamer regarding the allegations, “Gearbox takes any and all claims of this nature very seriously and we will abstain from commenting on the allegations Dave is making because it is a personnel matter. We appreciate David’s contributions to the Borderlands franchise and have continued to assert we would welcome him back into the mix as the voice of Claptrap and other future opportunities.”

In case you missed our previous coverage here, one aspect of Eddings’ most recent string of tweets centers around an alleged assault that happened a few years prior. According to the former Gearbox employee, “I ultimately offered to do it for “free” in exchange for past royalties owed plus an apology for something I’ve never spoken about publicly until now: Randy physically assaulted me in the lobby of the Marriott Marquis at GDC 2017.”

He also mentioned how he didn’t agree with Gearbox’s take on pending lawsuits, which is what the response above pertains to.

As far as Pitchford’s response to the assault allegations, he has yet to make a public statement as an individual at this time.
