If you grew up with video games in the early to mid-90’s, you might have glanced upon the artwork of Greg Martin. He worked on a variety of pieces of artwork for Nintendo, Sega and other companies, including the iconic Sonic the Hedgehog 2 box art you see above.
Sadly, Greg Martin passed away over the weekend after a lengthy career of art design, which first started at Hanna Barbera before moving on to box art design. A number of his works can be found over at this Nintendo Age forum, including Pac-Man, Marvel Land, various Adventure Island games, DuckTales 2 and many others.
An excerpt from the post states, “Greg was the rare person who both worked in and was a fan of the work of others in his industry. I don’t think he ever lost that sense of wonder he had as a teenager for really great artwork, and he was a collector himself of artwork, movies, art books, and other things. He was a huge fan of Frank Frazetta, Gil Elvgren, Hal Foster, and dozens if not hundreds of other artists.”
RIP, Greg. Your splendid artwork will never be forgotten.
