On the Elite Dangerous forums, CEO and Founder of Frontier Developments, David Braben, took a moment to apologize to the community for performance issues that players have been experiencing following the release of the Odyssey expansion.
The response from the community (on the forums) has been incredibly wholesome, thanking Braben for the update and information regarding upcoming hotfixes. Hopefully with the hotfixes from Frontier Developments rolling out, problems with the expansion can be smoothed out sooner rather than later.
Frontier Developments Apologizes for Issues With Elite Dangerous: Odyssey
After the release of the Odyssey expansion for Elite Dangerous on May 19, players have been reporting a myriad of performance issues, bugs, and server outages. On platforms like Steam, negative reviews have come pouring in, noting that the release feels premature and that the expansion could’ve used a bit more time to bake.
It doesn’t help that this is a paid expansion, with the base price sitting at $39.99 (USD) and the Deluxe Edition available for a purchase price of $44.99 (USD). Rather than brush these complaints aside, the team at Frontier Developments are working hard to make things right, one hotfix at a time.
Adding to this, CEO and Founder of Frontier Developments, David Braben, posted a personal, heartfelt apology in regards to the situation on the Elite Dangerous forums. Braben’s post reads as follows:
“With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.
First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.
Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.
Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine.
We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra.
I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine. I would like to thank you all for your patience and support.
The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.
Thank you all,
David”
The response on the Elite Dangerous forums has been generally positive, with players appreciating Braben’s apology and assurance that the team at Frontier Developments is working hard to correct the issues that players have been experiencing.
That said, we also understand the complaints that blanket places like the Steam page for Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. Players spent a good deal of money on the expansion, and it’s frustrating to have so many issues plague the expansion’s release.
What are your thoughts? Are you appreciative of Braben’s apology and the work the team at Frontier Developments is doing to get Elite Dangerous: Odyssey back on track? Or are you annoyed that all of these issues are present with the expansion in the first place, especially considering the cost to purchase the expansion?
