One of the perks of the Xbox Live membership is free games every month. Microsoft offers a blend of both Xbox One and 360 titles, with the 360 being backwards compatible, and though May's line-up isn't as strong as previous months, it still has a variety of options for players to enjoy.

For May, this is what Xbox fans can nab for free:

  • Marooners ($9.99 ERP): Available May 1 to 31 on Xbox One
  • The Golf Club 2 Featuring PGA Tour ($49.99 ERP): Available May 16 to June 15 on Xbox One
  • Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon ($19.99 ERP): Available May 1 to 15 on Xbox One and Xbox 360
  • Comic Jumper ($14.99 ERP): Available May 16 to 31 on Xbox One and Xbox 360

Previous months have usually offered something a little stronger, usually a AAA title, but that doesn't mean this month is a total wash. Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon may sound silly, but it's a lot of fun for those who haven't tried it out yet. Interested? Here's what you need to know:

"Thousands of giant insects and aliens once again ravage the earth, and only the Earth Defense Force can stop them. Defend the city of New Detroit against an infestation bigger and meaner than ever before. Destroy these monsters at all costs, even if it means turning entire city blocks into rubble!

"Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon and the soldiers are equipped better than ever in the latest cult classic iteration that follows in the footsteps of Earth Defense Force 2017 (Japanese Title "Earth Defense Force 3" developed by Sandlot), and Earth Defense Force: Insect Armageddon continues the rich history and hardcore fun of the series."

It's important to note that these free games cannot be claimed unless an Xbox Live Membership is active. As per Microsoft, "As an Xbox Live Gold Member, you get the most advanced multiplayer, bonus games, and exclusive member discounts in Microsoft Store. With Xbox Live Gold, you can stay connected with friends, family, and Xbox Live members around the world."

The next wave of free games begins on May 1.
